Overnight rut shaving completed and neighbourhoods planned for today
February 11, 2022 - 2:13am
- Evergreen
- Kelsey-Woodlawn
- Kensington
- Lakewood Suburban Centre
- Richmond Heights
- River Heights
- Stonebridge
City and contractor crews worked through the night shaving off the top layer of snow ruts on all streets in Aspen Ridge, Briarwood, Eastview, North Park and Nutana.
Today, 12 teams of two graders each will finish neighbourhoods that weren’t completed last night and move into the following neighbourhoods, continuing through the night:
All residential streets in these neighbourhoods will have rut shaving. Grader operators will go around parked vehicles but we encourage people to move them if there is off-street parking available. As graders shave off the top layers of ruts the snow will be stored in the parking lane.
Thank you for your patience and leaving space for our operators and equipment to safely do their work.

Grading begins tonight to improve mobility on residential streets with severe rutting
February 10, 2022 - 11:45am
Mild temperatures over the past couple of days are creating deep ruts on some residential streets. City and contractor crews are shifting their focus to shaving down the deep ruts where people are getting stuck or there’s a risk of damage to vehicles.
Beginning this evening, graders will start to shave the top layers of ruts on residential streets with severe rutting and store the snow in the parking lane. Snow removal may only occur in areas where there is no room to store the snow.
“To open up these streets quickly for residents, we need to move fast,” says Terry Schmidt, General Manager of Construction and Transportation. “Colder temperatures are coming soon which will make grading harder for us.”
Grading will be done by neighbourhood starting on the streets where the ruts are at least 15 centimetres deep, making it challenging for smaller vehicles. We will go around parked cars but encourage people to move vehicles if there is off-street parking available.
On streets with heavy on-street parking that are too narrow for our equipment, we will post No Parking signs in advance and relocate vehicles left on the street.
The work will occur day and night and we hope to complete all severely rutted streets within the next two weeks. This may be extended if there is a snow event that requires some staff to address priority street grading.
While grader operators attempt to keep driveways unobstructed, short snow ridges may be left behind. The location may be inspected for clearing if it completely blocks a vehicle from accessing the driveway.
Starting tomorrow, regular updates will be provided on saskatoon.ca/snow with neighbourhood locations. Note that grading will accommodate garbage and recycling collection schedules. Thank you for your patience and leaving space for our operators and equipment to safely do their work.
Caution on streets and sidewalks: rain, snow, high winds and a drop in temperature expected for Saskatoon
February 10, 2022 - 9:46am
Hold onto your hats, Saskatoon! Environment and Climate Change Canada tells us that these high winds may be joined by rain, snow and a temperature drop this evening.
Streets and sidewalks remain wet and slushy from recent rainfall, which is expected to freeze into the evening as temperatures drop quickly from the plus side to minus 12 degrees Celsius.
City crews have been applying sand at intersections along residential streets with packed snow; clearing a path to catch basins where water is ponding on streets from melting snow; and maintaining utility cuts on streets filled with gravel that softened with the warm temperatures.
Staff and equipment are prepared to respond to any type of weather affecting road conditions overnight and around the clock.
Drivers should adjust their driving for the road conditions, leave extra room and watch for blue and yellow flashing lights on road equipment.
More information will be provided today about our plan for addressing severe rutting that is forming on some streets.

Overnight rain causing wet and slippery conditions on residential streets and sidewalks
February 10, 2022 - 1:00am
Saskatoon experienced several hours of rain leaving streets and sidewalks wet and icy this morning. Priority streets that have been snow graded are wet with slippery spots this morning; however, streets with packed snow are very slippery. Drivers and people using the sidewalks should use caution.
City sanders were out all night and 16 units are actively applying salt and sand this morning, focusing on major streets, bridge decks and intersections.
Please keep back when you see blue and amber flashing lights on road maintenance equipment.

More than 1,200 traffic safety improvements identified through Neighbourhood Traffic Reviews
February 9, 2022 - 1:00pm
City transportation engineering staff collaborated with thousands of residents to complete 77 traffic reviews in all established neighbourhoods across Saskatoon since the first Neighbourhood Traffic Review (NTR) in 2013. City staff recently completed the final neighbourhood review planned for this program, marking a significant achievement.
“Rather than looking at each traffic concern individually, we took a step back and considered the traffic movements, safety requirements and local input for the entire neighbourhood,” said Jay Magus, Director of Transportation. “Public consultation with residents in the neighbourhood was key to understanding and solving each issue.”
The NTR program was established to address concerns about speeding, pedestrian safety and short cutting traffic from residents in a holistic manner, one neighbourhood at a time. Each review included community meetings, followed by traffic studies to measure vehicular speeds, traffic volumes and pedestrian usage. The data was then analyzed and reviewed to develop recommendations which was presented to residents, businesses and stakeholder groups for review and feedback.
“Our neighbourhood approach to traffic safety was very efficient for reviewing the issues, and also for budgeting and installing any recommended signage, devices and traffic calming measures,” said Magus. “A minimum of eight reviews would occur in one year, then we would do the majority of the work for those neighbourhoods the following year.”
The City of Saskatoon’s Neighbourhood Traffic Review program was recognized by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan in 2019 with the Exceptional Engineering/Geoscience Project Award and by the Project Management Institute, North Sask Chapter, with their Project of the Year Award in 2016.
The City would like to thank all residents who participated in the public engagement, as well as the Saskatoon Police Service, City Councillors, Community Associations, Saskatoon Public Schools, Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools and Great Works Consulting for their partnerships.
Neighbourhood Traffic Review final reports and implementation status are available at saskatoon.ca/ntr. Residents can request a traffic review for speeding concerns by using the Traffic Calming Guide and form at saskatoon.ca/trafficcalming. Other traffic concerns can be reported to our Customer Care Centre at 306-975-2476 or transportation@saskatoon.ca.
