Industrial Tree Planting
Urban Forestry’s Industrial Neighbourhood Tree Planting Program focuses on planting trees in the City boulevard adjacent to properties in industrial neighbourhoods. The goal of this program is to increase canopy cover and beautify industrial areas. This program is funded by levies on lot sales in industrial neighbourhoods.
Urban Forestry chooses appropriate boulevards for tree planting throughout industrial neighbourhoods. Business owners can also request trees using our Request a Tree Form.
Guidelines for planting site suitability are as described on the Request a Tree Page. Adjustments are made to setback requirements to accommodate the larger vehicle traffic that occurs in industrial neighbourhoods. For example, trees are planted further from driveways than they are in residential neighbourhoods to improve large vehicle sightlines.
A variety of large-canopy tree species will be planted. Species with do not produce fruit will be chosen to minimize the impact on landscaping. Requesters should choose preferred species from the Established Neighbourhood Tree Selections List.
When a planting site is chosen, a green stake is put in the ground and a letter is left notifying the adjacent business. If underground utilities interfere with the intended site, the planting will be moved or cancelled. Trees are planted between June 1 and October 31.
Urban Forestry is responsible for maintaining trees located on City property, which includes a watering program for newly planted trees. To assist with watering, a water bag may be placed at the base of the tree. You can help encourage successful tree establishment by doing additional watering during the summer months.
Urban Forestry is responsible for the pruning of all City-owned trees. Certified arborists prune neighbourhood boulevard trees on a 7-year cycle. Questions or concerns about the pruning or health of City trees can be submitted through Request a Tree Inspection or by emailing urban.forestry@saskatoon.ca.
