Request a Boulevard Tree
The City's Urban Forestry division is responsible for planting and maintaining all trees located on public property. This includes trees on boulevards, medians and in parks.
Homeowners and businesses can request the City plant a tree free of charge in the boulevard(s) or median(s) located in front of or next to their property by completing the online form below.
Tree Planting Guidelines
Tree planting requests will be reviewed based on the following guidelines:
- Proximity to existing trees
- Boulevard width
- Infrastructure conflicts (e.g., sidewalks, pathways, driveways, fire hydrants, street lights, overhead high voltage lines, underground water lines, etc.)
- Proximity to intersections
- Proximity to traffic signs
- Planting area must be landscaped, up to grade and free from obstructions, such as large rocks, landscaping fabric, raised beds and artificial turf.
Tree Species Selection
The following links list the tree species available for new and established neighbourhoods. Homeowners may list three choices of tree species in the online form below. Requests are filled subject to availability and suitability to the site. The final decision on tree placement and species selection will be made by the Urban Forestry Technician
TREE SELECTIONS (Established Neighbourhoods)
What is a boulevard?
A boulevard is public land adjacent to private property that houses underground utilities and other infrastructure.
What you can expect from us
- Inspections are done between May and October in the order in which the requests are received.
- A notice will be left at your residence or business at the time of inspection if a suitable planting site has been identified. A green stake will be placed on the boulevard to mark the area where the tree will be planted and the notice will include the species selected. If there are no underground utility conflicts, your request will be placed in a planting queue to be completed by the end of October. Requests we are unable to fulfill due to tree availability will carry over to next year.
- If there is not a suitable planting site, you will be notified by email and encouraged to plant a tree on your private property.
- The City will provide establishment watering for at least three years, but additional watering by homeowners is encouraged during periods of drought.
- The City is responsible for all pruning maintenance throughout the lifespan of the tree.
How you can help us
- Avoid herbicide damage when you (or your lawn care company) look after the grass around the tree. Do not apply any herbicide in the area near the root ball, trunk or leaves.
- Keep grass and weeds away from the trunk. Trees can establish more quickly when not competing with other plants for nutrients and water.
- Avoid damaging the bark with grass trimmers.
- Mulch with wood chips or other organic mulch around the base of the tree to keep soil cool and moisture in. Keep mulch away from the trunk of the tree.
Please note we are now only accepting requests for boulevard tree planting in 2025.
