This species is not classified by the IUCN but is considered a rare breed. Today, due to established breeding programs, their population is stable.
Risks: Risks to KuneKune pigs include habitat loss and hunting.
Diet: KuneKune pigs are herbivorous grazers and eat a variety of grasses, fruit, seeds, roots, tubers and foliage.

Fun Facts
- KuneKune, pronounced “cooney cooney”, is Maori for “fat and round,” which describes their typically short and round-bodied appearance.
- These pigs can possess fleshy “tassels” called pire pire that hang from its lower jaw.
- They are the only truly grazing pig, being able to survive on grasses alone.
About Us
The KuneKune pigs joined the zoo in spring of 2023 and the Saskatoon Zoo Society worked with local schools to name the dynamic duo.
Mokopuna pronounced ‘Mu ku pun a’ means “little one”
Toa pronounced ‘Tu a’ means “brave or warrior”
