City’s latest Flood Control Strategy project getting underway in Brevoort Park neighbourhood
May 22, 2024 - 10:00am
Construction is getting underway on the City of Saskatoon’s (City) fourth Flood Control Strategy (FCS) project. Once operational in 2025, flooding during intense summer storms will be mitigated around Early Drive and Tucker Crescent in the Brevoort Park neighbourhood.
“This project includes new storm sewer pipes and underground storm water storage,” says Russ Munro, Director of Saskatoon Water. “Rainwater that typically pools and floods area properties during intense summer storms, will now flow into underground storage tanks that are being installed in Brevoort Park South.”
The storage tanks will temporarily hold the water which will slowly drain through the storm sewer system to the South Saskatchewan River. The project will also include new landscaping once the tanks are installed. Most of Brevoort Park South is fenced off and will remain closed for several months following construction to give the new sod and trees adequate time to establish.
The FCS was approved by City Council in 2018. The Government of Canada is contributing 40% of the eligible construction costs up to a maximum of $21.6 million toward all nine FCS projects. The City is funding the remaining construction costs through the Storm Water Utility Capital Program and revenue generated from Storm Water Utility charges.
FCS projects to date include the W.W. Ashley District dry storm pond, which opened in 2022, and the Churchill Park dry storm pond completed in 2023. Five more FCS projects will be built in Saskatoon’s most flood-prone neighbourhoods over the next three years.
For more information about the FCS and future project locations, visit saskatoon.ca/floodplan.

Cart swaps in full swing; reminder to check your schedule.
May 21, 2024 - 10:30am
The City is pleased to report that its first round of cart swaps is ahead of schedule, with nearly 11,000 smaller black carts already changed out city-wide. With initial cart swaps now complete in 40 neighbourhoods and counting, we are asking households that have requested a smaller cart, but have not yet received it, to review the online calendar, as the schedule has changed considerably.
If you missed your initial cart swap, the City’s contracted vendor will be returning prior to June 15 to attempt a second swap. The vendor will be attempting additional swaps in the first two weeks of June and dates specific to neighbourhoods will not be listed online. Make sure to roll out your existing cart on each garbage collection day before 7 a.m. and leave it out until 6 p.m. until the cart swap window closes on June 15. Existing carts must be left at their collection location (front street or back lane, depending on your address) to be emptied. The smaller cart will not be delivered unless your existing cart is retrieved. If you miss the follow-up cart swap attempts, you will need to resubmit your request during the next intake period and will continue to be charged your existing cart rate.
Requests for the second round of cart swaps will begin on July 8, 2024 for those considering a smaller cart or who need to resubmit their request.
Visit saskatoon.ca/cartswap for all the details and to see when your neighbourhood is getting swapped. To learn more about the Black Cart program, visit saskatoon.ca/blackcart or call Customer Care at 306-975-2476.
City steps up efforts to repair potholes this spring
May 17, 2024 - 3:15pm
With the late spring freeze and thaw we've had, and the increase in potholes, City crews are now attacking the bumpy roads with round-the-clock repairs. There have already been more potholes reported this year than in the entire season in recent years.
While City crews have been out repairing potholes since the snow melted, rain has occasionally delayed these efforts. However, crews have been on the streets day and night, seven days a week. Crews are working to repair potholes throughout the city and are committed to this aggressive approach to fixing potholes and maintaining safe roadways for all residents.
Residents are encouraged to continue reporting potholes to the Customer Care Centre at 306-975-2476 and on the Report a Pothole Map, where you can view reported and completed potholes.
Potholes that may cause injury or vehicle damage are considered an emergency. They are marked as High Priority on the Report a Pothole Map and will be addressed within 24 to 72 hours, weather permitting. Lower priority potholes will be repaired next to maintain the road network's longevity while prioritizing resident safety.
Remember to reduce speed and watch for crews for everyone's safety. For more information about potholes and utility cut repairs, visit saskatoon.ca/potholes.

City releases 2023 Report on Service, Savings, Sustainability (SSS)
May 16, 2024 - 3:30pm
- capture savings
- enhance services for residents, and
- make improvements in the area of sustainability
The City has released its 2023 Report on Service, Savings, Sustainability (SSS). The SSS Report has been released annually since 2005 when City Council directed Administration to prepare a report annually on efficiencies implemented in the previous year. The report highlights the ways the City’s business lines teams worked together in the preceding year to:
“This type of report is not one that is done in many other municipalities,” says Celene Anger, the City’s Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer. “This year’s report includes more than 130 stories from business areas across the City which feature ways we have both improved and streamlined services without compromising quality.”
The report identifies $4.35 million in total savings. These savings were realized through cost avoidance, cost reductions, and time savings.
The 2023 SSS Report is available at saskatoon.ca/SSSreport. As well, you will also find a video on this webpage that provides a preview of the full report, highlighting four of the stories featured in 2023
