Well done Saskatoon! Flip flip hurray! We’re thrilled to share the weather cooperated and an excellent crowd came out to attend the 46th Annual Civic Pancake Breakfast on Thursday, June 16. We had fun battering, buttering and serving up 1377 hearty pancake breakfasts to successfully raise $9783.00 (including tips) for United Way Saskatoon & Area with the help of our breakfast attendees, volunteers and valued sponsors.
For the first time, the fundraising event featured an Act of Kindness board, sponsored by Saskatoon City Employees Credit Union: 83 extra breakfast tickets were generously purchased and donated for someone in need of a hot breakfast that morning. Unused breakfast ticket sales were donated to United Way Saskatoon & Area and reflected in the final donation amount. It was great to see community members help pay it forward with kindness for someone in need.
The entertainment stage kept things exciting all morning with a diverse range of talented musicians and dancers from traditional Ukrainian dancers to lively Métis fiddlers. As always, the spirited relay races, Saskatoon Police Service and Saskatoon Fire Department vehicles, educational City team displays and beloved furry friends Sarge (Saskatoon Police Service), Bruiser the Bulldog (Saskatoon RUSH) and Poke Check (Saskatoon Blades) filled the morning with loads of fun.
The City of Saskatoon is committed to environmental stewardship and working together to have environmentally friendly and sustainable practices for our organization and the community at large. In our commitment to strive for a zero-waste breakfast event each year, the final waste tally/results for this year’s breakfast are as follows:
In total, we were able to divert a whopping 89.8kg (or 197.97 lbs!) of waste from the landfill, broken down as:
Our non-recyclable garbage total was 32kg (or 70.54 lbs) (26.3%) and mainly consisted of single-use plastics and film.
We were able to achieve this by using compostable cutlery, plates, and cups and purchasing recyclable items such as beverage tetra paks or items in bulk for toppings.
All green cart materials were sent to City of Saskatoon Compost depots to be turned into usable soil, with blue cart materials sent within Canada/North America to be made into new household packaging materials.
The City of Saskatoon extends a grateful thank you to all our volunteers and our valued breakfast sponsors. We could not hold this breakfast without your generous support!
Our 2022 Pancake Breakfast Sponsors included:
Due to COVID-19, the last Civic Pancake Breakfast was held in 2019, donating $4650 to United Way Saskatoon & Area, having served 981 pancake breakfasts.
For over 50 years, United Way Saskatoon & Area has worked to positively impact the lives of vulnerable children, youth, and their families in our community by identifying and addressing barriers.

Rain or shine, it’s time to Rock Your Roots for Indigenous Peoples Day!
June 20, 2022 - 2:02am
The Rock Your Roots Walk for Reconciliation takes place tomorrow (June 21) on National Indigenous Peoples Day. This walk is one way to demonstrate a commitment to Reconciliation, honour Residential School Survivors, and work towards an inclusive community.
Everyone is welcome to attend and join the walk. Cultural performers from across the city have been invited to ‘rock their roots’ along the walk route by sharing a piece of their culture and showcasing Saskatoon’s incredible diversity. Walk participants are welcome to wear their cultural regalia, an EveryChildMatters shirt, or any other orange shirt.
Rock Your Roots is put on by Reconciliation Saskatoon, which the City of Saskatoon co-chairs along with the Office of the Treaty Commissioner. The event, attended by thousands in past years, was first held in 2016 with attendance growing each year. The intent is to answer the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's Calls to Action.
Rock Your Roots will go ahead, rain or shine. The walk takes place between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Participants should arrive for 10:00 a.m. at the start location—in Victoria Park across from Legion Branch 63 on Spadina Crescent West.
