Reminder: Sidewalk and private property snow clearing should ensure safe sidewalks and unobstructed winter roads
January 22, 2024 - 11:30am
The City of Saskatoon is reminding residents about responsible snow clearing practices to help create safe and accessible sidewalks, and unobstructed road use.
As per Bylaw No. 8463, The Sidewalk Clearing Bylaw, residents in Saskatoon are obligated to clear snow, ice or other debris from sidewalks. Residents are required to clear sidewalks within 48 hours after a snowfall, and businesses along certain streets need to have sidewalks cleared within 24 hours, while both should have minimal snowpack and at least 1.2 metres cleared.
The City is also reminding residents and business owners to keep snow cleared from sidewalks, driveways and private property off roadways. Pushing additional snow onto roadways can create hazards and obstruct road use. The City requests that the cleared snow be placed on private property.
The City extends its appreciation to all residents for their cooperation in maintaining a safe and well-functioning sidewalk and road network, while not creating additional obstructions to traffic, and allowing crews to effectively complete their winter maintenance activities.

City declares Snow Event after overnight snowfall
January 22, 2024 - 7:20am
Saskatoon received five centimetres of snow overnight. City snow crews focused on applying de-icing materials on high speed and high traffic streets, intersections, and bridge decks while it snowed. Caution is advised: even with the use of de-icing material, extra moisture may cause slippery conditions during peak driving times, especially on bridges.
The second snow event of the season was declared this morning; contractors have been called in to assist City crews with clean-up. Today, there are 22 graders, 15 sanders, nine plows and five sidewalk plows moving around the city.
The snow event response follows the Priority Street system:
Priority 1 – Freeways and major arterials. This includes Circle Dr. and streets with three+ lanes each way like Idylwyld Dr., 22nd St and College Dr.
Priority 2 - Arterials with double-lanes and bus routes. Double-lane streets like Clarence Ave, McKercher Dr. and Millar Ave.
Priority 3 - Collector streets, remaining Business Improvement District streets and school zones. These streets take you through your neighbourhood like Louise Ave, Howell Ave., and Main St.
Drivers should be aware of changing weather that can affect road and sidewalk conditions and adjust their driving for the conditions. Leave extra room and watch for blue and yellow flashing lights on road equipment.
