Since 1990, Saskatoon City Council has proclaimed March Race Relations Month. The month includes the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination which the City marks annually with the presentation of the Living in Harmony Awards.
The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed on March 21st to commemorate the Sharpeville Massacre in South Africa that occurred on March 21, 1960. On this day, police opened fire on a peaceful Apartheid protest that was being carried out by Black residents in the township of Sharpeville (South Africa).
