Winter outage safety tips:
- Stay safe: Avoid using candles for lighting to prevent fire hazards; use flashlights instead. Do not use propane heat inside unless the heater is specifically rated for indoor use.
- Unplug electronics: Disconnect sensitive electronics to protect them from power surges when electricity is restored.
- Keep fridge closed: Minimize opening your refrigerator and freezer to keep food cold longer.
- Stay warm: Add layers of clothing or blankets if needed.
- Check on neighbors: Ensure that elderly or vulnerable neighbors are safe and have what they need.
- Have a backup power supply: Have a generator or backup supply. Use an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for essential equipment.
- Get a surge protector: Prevent costly damage to appliances; get surge protectors for electronics or install a whole-house surge protector.
