Saskatoon Fire - News Releases

At approximately 11:27 this morning, the Saskatoon Fire Department was alerted to a motor vehicle collision between a semi tractor-trailer and a cube van on Highway 12. It was reported that one of the vehicles involved was transporting chemicals at the time of the collision.

Two fire engines, one heavy rescue unit, one haz-mat unit, and one battalion chief were dispatched for response. Upon arrival, fire crews observed a semi tractor-trailer that had collided with the rear of a cube van, resulting in a significantly large debris field. Haz-mat technicians worked on scene to confirm that the chemical being transported was five 45-gallon barrels of acetone; it was also confirmed that none of the chemical barrels were leaking.

There were no serious injuries, environmental impacts, or public safety risks as a result of this collision.

The Warman Fire Department also responded to assist on scene. 

Saskatoon Fire Department responded to 410 Montreal Ave South at approximately 9:09 pm tonight, for  a reported fire in a bedroom of a care home. Three Engines, One ladder Truck, One Heavy Rescue Truck and a Battalion Chief responded.

On arrival crews were met by the staff and they reported all occupants were out of the house. The fire was reported to be in the bedroom on the first floor, fire crews entered the house and found a fire in the bedroom involving the mattress. A quick attack was made and the fire was brought under control in under 10 minutes. The house was searched and no one was found.

The occupants were taken to a nearby house, no injuries were reported.

The fire is currently under investigation and is suspicious. There is no damage estimate at this time.

The investigation into the cause of this fire has been concluded and it was determined unattended cooking contributed to a fire starting in the kitchen of the third floor suite. Fire damage was limited to the suite in which the fire started along with heavy smoke damage to the third floor hallway. 

It is estimated this fire caused $80,000 damage.

Saskatoon Fire Department reminds everyone not to leave cooking unattended.

At Approximately 3:00 A.M. The Saskatoon Fire Department received two 911 calls reporting a possible fire in an occupied apartment building on Ave V N.  Three engines, one ladder, one rescue and a battalion chief were dispatched to the call.  When crews arrived they found smoke exiting the third floor of the apartment, they were notified the occupants of that suite were outside.  Crews brought in hose lines and advanced to the third floor where they were able to quickly find the fire and extinguish it.  Search for other victims continued while ventilation to remove the smoke  began.   The mother living in the suite stated she woke up to the alarms and went to wake her son up realizing the apartment was full of black smoke.

A fire investigator was called to the scene, a cause or damage estimate has not been determined at this time. 

No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.

The Saskatoon Fire Department and Emergency Management Organization have concluded on scene of an unknown substance behind 1715 Idylwyld Drive North.

Test results of the substance found have confirmed it to be non-hazardous.

The civilian who had been directly exposed to the substance was assessed on scene by firefighter-paramedics before being transported to the hospital by ambulance as a precautionary measure. The individual was in stable condition and was not experiencing any signs or symptoms of a hazardous exposure.

There were no injuries or exposures to fire department personnel or emergency management officials as a result of this incident, nor was there any environmental impact as a result of the substance or testing processes.

The Saskatoon Fire Department wishes to thank members of the public for following the direction of the Saskatoon Police Service on scene, allowing crews to work safely.

There will be no further updates provided in relation to this incident.

The Saskatoon Fire Department and Emergency Management Organization have responded accordingly with the following units committed to this incident: one fire engine, one haz-mat unit, one decontamination unit, one mobile command unit, and one battalion chief.

Haz-mat crews are working to identify the origin of the substance through a variety of testing processes. 

Currently, one civilian has been directly exposed to the substance; however, the condition of that individual is unconfirmed at this time.

There is no indication of any risk to members of the public who have not been directly exposed to the substance.

This incident is ongoing and an update will be provided as additional details become known.

 Saskatoon Fire Department responds to Car and Garage fire on 113^th  Street West

At approximately 5:20 AM the Saskatoon Fire Department responded  to a report of a car and nearby garage on fire on 113^th Street West.

3 Fire Engines, 1 Rescue Unit, 1 Aerial Ladder Truck, and 1 Battalion Chief responded.

Upon arrival fire crews found 2 vehicles fully involved as well as the exterior of the garage.

Crews performed a quick attack and had the fire under control in under 10 minutes.

A Fire Investigator was called, and the fire is under investigation.

There were no injuries reported.

 Damages are estimated at 40,000 dollars. 

Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call at 11:23 pm reporting smoke and a burning smell at the Anytime Fitness at 300 Confederation Dr.

Four Engine companies, one ladder truck, one heavy rescue truck and a battalion chief were dispatched. On arrival crews found light smoke in the building and observed that the building was being re - roofed, fire crews accessed the roof with ground ladders and an ladder truck. A small fire was found on the roof and it was extinguished. Fire crews used axes and a chain saw to check for fire extension on the roof and no further fire was found. A electric fan was used to remove the remaining smoke from the building. 

The fire is under investigation and there is no damage estimate at this time.

At 5:48 am this morning, the Saskatoon fire department received multiple 911 calls reporting a garage on fire behind 1713 ave G north. Three engine companies, one ladder truck, a heavy rescue truck and battalion chef were dispatched to the scene.

Enroute crews reported seeing flames and smoke coming from the area.

On arrival a garage was found to be fully involved along with a large spruce tree and multiple other trees in the back yard. Fire crews preformed a quick attack with multiple lines prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures. The fire was brought under control in approximately 20 minutes.

City electrical was called to deal with down power lines. Two neighboring garages received damage as a result of the fire.

A fire investigator was called to the scene, the fire is currently under investigation.

There is no damage estimates and no injuries occurred as a result of this fire.

At 10:37 PM, Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a house fire on Verbeke Court. Three Engines, one Ladder Company, one Rescue Unit, and one Battalion Chief were dispatched.

Crews arrived on scene to find light smoke still showing and fire damage to the exterior of the garage.  Prior to the Departments arrival, a neighbor was able to use his garden hose to prevent the fire from spreading and getting into the attic space. A hose line was immediately deployed by Firefighters and used to completely extinguish and cool any remaining fire and hot spots.

Firefighters verified all occupants were safe and uninjured while another crew searched inside the garage and attic space for fire extension. Fortunately, the majority of the damage sustained was limited to the exterior of the structure. The home next door also sustained damage on its exterior due to close proximity to the heat and flames. 

A Fire Investigator was called to the scene, the cause is undetermined at this time. The estimated damage is $50,000 which includes the damage to the exterior of the second house. No injuries occurred due to this incident.
