Fire behind warehouse - 2500 Block of Jasper Avenue

At 3:24 a.m. on August 11, 2022, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a call reporting heavy black smoke behind a building in the 2500 Block of Jasper Avenue. The caller did not know what was on fire. Three fire engines, one ladder truck, one rescue unit and the Battalion Chief were dispatched. First arriving fire crew reported a stack of pallets fully involved on fire behind a large structure. Two fire engines were dedicated to this fire and the other fire crews returned to their stations. Storage containers that the pallets were located beside were checked for fire and heat extension to their interiors. Fire damage was contained to the exterior of the storage units. This fire was brought under control at 3:39 a.m.
No injuries resulted from this fire.
Our Fire Investigator has concluded the scene examination. Cause of the fire is suspicious with $1000 damage. Fire originated in the yard and the stack of pallets. Police will continue their portion of the investigation.
Fire in a suite - 500 Block of Avenue W South

At 7:45 p.m. on August 10, 2022, a fire crew and fire engine were attending a community event in the area of Avenue W South. A person approached our fire crew and stated they saw smoke coming from an apartment in the 500 Block of Avenue W South. Our fire crew arrived at 7:46 p.m. The police were on scene and reported a fire in the basement of this apartment complex. An additional two fire engines, one ladder unit, one rescue unit and the Battalion Chief were dispatched to the fire. Tactical duties were assigned to all incoming fire crews and the fire crew that was first on scene located the fire suite and reported smoke showing. The door to the suite was locked. Fire crews forced entry into the suite and began extinguishing a fire in a small storage room beside the suite door. This fire was brought under control at 8:11 p.m.
No injuries to civilians or firefighters occurred as a result of this fire. The suite was vacant at the time of the fire. Fire crews ventilated the building, to clear it of smoke and carbon monoxide that resulted from the fire.
A Fire Investigator attended the scene and the cause has been determined as suspicious. The Saskatoon Police will continue their portion of the investigation. Fire originated in a small storage room causing approximately $30,000 damage to the suite.
Structure fire - 200 Block of Elm Street
August 8, 2022 - 9:50 am
At 10:43 p.m. on August 7, 2022, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a report of hearing an alarm ringing at a neighbor's property in the 200 Block of Elm Street. It was unknown if anyone was home. It was unknown if it was a carbon monoxide or smoke alarm ringing. This call was dispatched as the latter to ensure enough resources would respond if need be. Three fire engines, one rescue unit, one ladder truck and the Battalion Chief responded. First arriving fire crews saw no sign of fire from the street. Firefighters did an evaluation of the interior from the exterior. It was determined that the door to the house needed to be breached as smoke was visible inside. Upon forcing entry through the front door, firefighters encountered thick smoke conditions. A small fire was located at the top of the stairwell to the basement. The fire was quickly extinguished. A female occupant was discovered in a bedroom and removed by firefighters. Patient care was transferred to the ambulance service who transported the occupant to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
Fire crews ventilated the structure then returned to their respective stations.
The Fire Investigator estimates the damage to be $1000 to the flooring of the structure. It was the quick call to the fire department by the neighbor at the onset of hearing an alarm that assisted in minimizing property damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Patient status is not known at this time or the reason that the occupant was not able to self evacuate.
An update as to the cause of this fire will be reported when it is available.
Garage damaged by fire in the 1300 Block of Avenue E North

At 5:33 a.m. on August 6, 2022, the Saskatoon Fire Communications Centre received a call of someone lighting a fire in a dumpster in the back lane. One fire engine responded to the 1300 Block of Avenue E North. On arrival, a dumpster was on fire and the heat of the fire damaged the exterior finishing of a detached garage. The Fire Investigator determined the fire is suspicious. The scene was documented and information relayed to the police service for their follow up. Damage to the garage is estimated at $1000.

Structure fire - 100 Block of Avenue I South

At 5:27 a.m. on August 6, 2022, the Saskatoon Fire Department to a structure fire in the 100 block of Avenue I South. Three fire engines, one ladder unit, one rescue unit and the Battalion chief were dispatched. First arriving fire crews reported a single storey duplex on fire. Structure was reported as vacant at the time of the fire. All incoming fire crews were assigned tactical duties on their arrival. Firefighters began an interior attack on the fire. Utility services were shut down for scene safety. At 5:38 a.m., the roof was identified as deflecting in a downward direction. Searches were done on both sides of the duplex to ensure no persons were inside. This fire was brought under control at 5:47 a.m.
No injuries to firefighters or civilians resulted from this fire. The fire crews have now returned to their respective stations.
Our Fire Investigator has concluded the fire investigation. Cause of the fire is suspicious. A rear door to one unit was broken into and a fire started in a closet on the main floor living room. Fire extended from the closet into the attic and roof. Damage is estimated at $150,000. Police Investigators will continue their portion of the investigation into this suspicious fire.
Vehicle rollover on Idylwyld Drive at Lorne Avenue

At 6:26 p.m. on August 5, 2022, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a call for a single vehicle that had rolled over onto its roof on Idylwyld Drive at the Lorne Avenue exit. One fire engine, one rescue unit and the Battalion Chief responded. On arrival, the fire crews identified a car on its roof with one driver inside suspended from the seatbelt. Fire crews stabilized the car to ensure it wouldn't move then prepared equipment to extricate the patient. Firefighters cut the seatbelt, freeing the driver and gently placed the patient on their stomach. The patient was able to safely crawl out of the vehicle through the rear driver side window. Fire crews transferred patient care to the ambulance service.
Fire in Laundry room - 400 Block of Pendygrasse Road
August 5, 2022 - 6:43 pm
At 3:06 p.m., on August 5 2022, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a call that the fire alarm in a 3 storey, multi-residential building was ringing and black smoke was coming from the laundry room. Dispatched to the fire were three fire engines, one ladder truck and one rescue unit. On arrival, fire crews reported occupants evacuating the building. First arriving fire crews entered the building and reported black smoke coming from the door serving the laundry room. Upon entering the room, a trash can on fire was extinguished. This fire was brought under control at 3:17 p.m. The Fire Investigator was requested to attend. Ventilation to remove all smoke from the building was performed. Fire crews reset the fire alarm system.
When fire crews were ready to leave the scene, the incident was turned over to the SFD Fire Investigator.
Fire Investigation has concluded. Our Fire Investigator identified an open flame device, a lighter, which was seized and taken as evidence by the police service. Investigation is ongoing as to the cause of the fire by the Saskatoon Police Service. Damage is estimated at $4000 and fire originated in a trash can in a corner of the laundry room.
Ladder Truck Performs Rescue - 200 Block of 19th Street East

At 10:59 a.m., on July 27, 2022, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a call to help a person that was suspended 40 feet in the air in the 200 Block of 19th Street East. Dispatched to the scene were one fire engine, one ladder truck and the Battalion Chief. On arrival, it was identified that the ladder truck could set up and assist the person down to the ground. At 11:10 a.m. the ladder truck set up its hydraulic ladder. With two firefighters in the bucket, they were able to secure the person into the bucket and bring them safely to the ground at 11:22 a.m. The person was not injured.
At 11: 29 a.m., the ladder truck returned to its respective station.
Garage Fire - 200 Block of Ash Street

At 7:21 p.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department received a call for a detached garage on fire. Three fire engines, one ladder truck, one rescue unit and the Battalion Chief were dispatched. First arriving fire crews identified two garages on fire side by side. All responding fire crews were assigned tactical duties by the Incident Commander. Extinguishment of the fire was initiated immediately. The fire was brought under control at 7:35 p.m. A Fire Investigator was notified to attend. Fire crews checked for fire extension and hot spots. At 7:51 p.m., fire crews and their trucks began to pack up their equipment and return to their respective fire stations.
At 8:31 p.m., the Incident Commander turned the fire scene over to the Fire Investigator. The fire investigation has concluded and this fire is undetermined. Fire originated with straw bales stored between the garages. It cannot be determined with plausible determination whether the bales were lit on fire or internal heating occurred creating an opportunity for the straw bales to reach their ignition temperature. Damage is estimated at $70,000.
Shed fire - 1200 Block Avenue G North

At 6:01 a.m. on July 21, 2022 the Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a call for dark smoke in the area of the 1200 Block of Avenue G North. It was unknown what was on fire. Three fire engines, one ladder unit, one rescue unit and the Battalion Chief responded. Two sheds on fire were located in the 1200 Block of Avenue G North at 6:10 a.m. This fire was quickly brought under control.
A Fire Investigator was requested and an update will be provided as soon as practical.
