What is Happening?

In September 2024, Saskatoon City Council directed administration to investigate the possibility of moving the primary waste collection location for the Eastview neighborhood from the back lane to the front street.  The report is found here.  

Please tell us how the change in waste collection location would impact you through a short survey. We want to understand what your waste collection location preference would be, as well as any opportunities and challenges that you face with your waste collection. Your feedback will help inform the report that will go to Council for consideration.  

Background

We acknowledge that changing the waste collection location is not a small decision and will affect each resident differently. When the request was received to investigate the potential to move the collection location, we reviewed operational, safety and financial considerations (outlined in the Waste Collection Location Assessment tab). 

Process

This phase of the process provides the opportunity for Eastview residents with curbside residential waste collection to provide feedback in a survey. All input will be considered and is meaningful in helping to make an informed decision. It is important that we hear back from residents to ensure the wishes of the entire neighbourhood are captured.  Community input is an important factor and will be considered with the operational, safety and financial impacts.

Next Steps

Following public engagement, the Waste Team will prepare a council report that includes a recommendation on the collection location and outlines information collected from the internal review and public engagement processes.

Introduction

The City collects waste from both the front street and back lane. The collection location impacts collection efficiency, and in some cases, the type and size of equipment required to provide service. Increased health and safety incidents and lane maintenance costs are associated with the back lane collection. Back lane collections are typically more costly than front street collections. Alleys are typically not designed for large truck traffic, and the size of the garbage trucks can lead to maneuvering difficulties. Providing back lane collection can also necessitate additional snow plowing or snow removal in the winter, and the weight of the garbage trucks can lead to increased rutting, potholes and maintenance of alleys.

Assessment Criteria 

The following is an outline of an assessment completed on the collection locations in the Eastview neighbourhood.

Financial impacts from converting the Eastview neighbourhood to front lane collection are estimated to be minimal. Any changes to budget would be confirmed and included in the 2026/2027 Business Plan and Budget submissions.
