17th Street Extension Project is currently on hold

City Council moved the following at it's March 29 Regular Meeting of City Council.

That Administration defer the detailed design and construction of the 17th Street Extension until further consideration can be made through updated planning in the area such as the previously outlined West Industrial Concept Plan work; and
That the Administration report back with a project status update and administrative recommendation at the appropriate time.

Public engagement for this project is now closed.

The City of Saskatoon asked for input from the residents of Holiday Park and King George on the potential extension of 17th Street West from Avenue P to Avenue W.

Several people attended the public drop-in session on November 15, 2022 with this engagement material on display. Thank you to everyone who attended the drop-in session or completed the online survey. You can read more about the engagement process in our What We Heard Engagement Summary.

Next Steps

The Administration will provide a project status update to City Council once more planning is completed in the area, such as the previously outlined West Industrial Concept Plan work. See West Industrial Area - Expanded Project Scope, City Council Regular Meeting - November 8, 2022, which will be considered for funding during the 2024/2025 budget process.

Background

In 2004 and 2005, the neighbourhoods of Holiday Park and King George were concerned that the future road closures around the Water Treatment Plant would cause shortcutting through their neighbourhoods. Several recommendations were made to install or modify transportation infrastructure to mitigate the potential shortcutting. The 17th Street Extension project is one of the remaining recommendations left to be implemented.

Now that most of the recommendations to mitigate shortcutting have been implemented, we are following up with residents to understand if shortcutting is still a concern.
