Multi-Residential Structure Fire - 100 block of Avenue U South
At approximately 5:03 p.m. on May 28, 2020, the Saskatoon Fire Department received multiple 911 calls reporting smoke in a multi-unit residential apartment building. Four fire engines, one rescue unit, one aerial ladder truck, one fire investigation unit, and one battalion chief were dispatched for response. Fire dispatchers worked simultaneously to dispatch firefighters and obtain critical information about the incident from 911 callers.
Upon arrival of responding fire crews, fire dispatchers were able to provide a believed unit of origin, supporting the commanding fire officer in coordinating a fire attack strategy. Immediately, fire crews initiated a transitional attack to soften the fire from the exterior before breaching a door for entry. Firefighters were met with heavy smoke conditions upon entering the building. While performing searches, two occupants were located inside a unit and were evacuated by fire crews. The unit of origin was quickly found with the fire being brought under control in less than 20 minutes from the time of the first fire engine arriving on scene. Ventilation of the structure was conducted to clear the entire building of remaining smoke and carbon monoxide. There were no injuries sustained to fire or civilian personnel as a result of this incident.
Firefighters have concluded on scene and a fire investigator is working to identify a cause and assess the damage.
