Prevent Irritable Sewer Syndrome!
FLUSHABLE WIPES AND PAPER TOWEL ARE CRUDDY TO YOUR SEWER SYSTEM
Food products containing grease, fats and oils, coffee grounds, and materials like flushable wipes, paper towel, personal hygiene items, birth control methods, pharmaceuticals and hair cause blockages that are costly to repair and bad for your house’s health.
HOW THIS AFFECTS YOU:
- Grease Clogs: Food products such as oils, meat grease, butter, gravy and salad dressing build up on the walls of the sewer system.
- Blockages: Personal hygiene & family planning products including baby wipes, personal hygiene products, don’t break down in the sewer system – despite manufacturer claims.
- Safety Risks: Household hazardous waste products such as paint, solvents, household cleaners, and motor oil, place stress on the sewer system and create risks to public and worker safety.
- Pharmaceutical Residues: Pharmaceuticals and other medicines do not easily breakdown in the wastewater treatment process and can pass directly into the South Saskatchewan River.
ALTERNATIVES TO FLUSHING
- Wipe fats, oils, grease, cooking oil, butter, sauces, and salad dressings off cooking equipment with paper towel and place in your Green Cart before washing.
- Compost organic waste (food scraps, coffee grounds and paper towel) in your Green Cart or compost bin.
- Return pharmaceuticals to pharmacy.
- Dispose of wipes, diapers, personal hygiene products, and birth control methods in the garbage.
- Unload hazardous products at the household hazardous waste drop-off site.
