Blowing snow and drop in temperatures may create icy conditions
March 7, 2022 - 9:50am
Environment Canada issued a blowing snow advisory today to prepare people for strong winds with light snow that may create visibility issues this afternoon and into the night. Icy conditions may develop due to wet streets and dropping temperatures. Drivers should adjust their driving with changing road conditions.
Crews will be applying sand to improve traction, with a focus on Circle Drive and other major streets, bridge decks and intersections. The wind will make this challenging, as it will blow away sand as it is applied. Environment Canada suggests that if visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for taillights ahead and be prepared to stop.
The strong wind may create deep snow drifts in wide open areas with current snow accumulation. These areas will be graded or snow will be removed with loaders if it prevents people from accessing the area once the visibility improves.

Saskatoon’s sixth snow event declared to activate the 72-hour clean-up
March 4, 2022 - 10:32am
Approximately 15 centimetres of snow has accumulated in Saskatoon since early this morning. The snowfall is expected to end this evening allowing City crews to make significant headway on clean-up overnight.
City and contractor crews are grading priority streets to clear all driving lanes over the next 72 hours, starting with the highest priority streets including Circle Drive, expressways, arterials and routes to emergency facilities. City-managed sidewalks and pathways will be cleared within 48 hours.
Drivers are urged to adjust for winter conditions and leave extra room for stopping as intersections may be slippery due to fresh snow. Sidewalk users should use extra caution as well.
Crews have been working non-stop since early this morning plowing Circle Drive, grading the driving lanes of major streets, and applying sand for traction during the heavy snowfall.
Please keep back when you see blue and amber flashing lights to let road equipment complete their pass.
Additional information
Removal of snow piles on priority 2 and 3 streets will be on hold during this snow event clean-up work.

Transit service strained by global auto parts shortage: recovery plan in place
March 2, 2022 - 10:06am
- Buses are being sent to third party garages to add to maintenance resources.
- Buses with long term defects or parts that are not available or delayed are being used to fix other buses.
- Check Engine Light calls are being investigated and sent back on the road more quickly.
- Issues that do not involve Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning, brakes or steering are quickly checked and sent back on the road if it is safe to do so. HVAC, brakes and steering issues that need repair are booked for a mechanic as soon as possible, however fixing the issue is contingent on parts availability.
- Working with nearby Transit properties to determine what parts can be accessed from them. Transit has also been working with parts distributors to get as many parts as possible.
- To ensure more parts are on-hand, maximum/minimum stock levels have been changed for high-demand parts or for parts that take longer to obtain.
- Maintenance staff have been working overtime.
Saskatoon Transit continues to deliver service as world-wide supply chain shortages put a strain on service.
“The ability to source and obtain parts in a timely manner because of the parts shortages related to the pandemic and other recent events, globally and nationally, have been major contributing factors to getting buses repaired and quickly back into service,” says Jim McDonald, Director of Saskatoon Transit.
McDonald says the challenges in obtaining parts in a timely manner, as well as increased probability of mechanical breakdowns with an aging fleet, differentiates this winter from other winters with prolonged extreme cold weather events.
“Fortunately, the extreme cold weather has subsided, but it will take a few days to address the backlog of mechanical repairs.”
What Transit is doing:
On average, Saskatoon Transit has been about five to ten buses short during weekdays. We know service cuts of any kind have a significant impact on those that rely on Transit Services. The team at Transit considers all options when required to make service reductions and decisions are based on minimizing impacts to riders.
The service impact is a reduction in some neighbourhood frequency, but no routes are completely cancelled and service to High Schools is covered, however riders may need to take alternate routes.
Solutions to get more buses on the road:
Tips for Transit riders:
Service alerts are posted to the Transit app and Google Maps Transit as soon as possible however riders are encouraged to check for service alerts one hour before they travel. Riders can “pin” the routes taken most often in the Transit app to receive push notifications about service disruptions. Alerts are also posted every morning and afternoon to SaskatoonTransit.ca/service-alerts and Twitter (@StoonTransit), with periodic updates as the situation changes. Riders can also call the Customer Service Centre at 306-975-3100 for updates (7:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. M-F).
If there is a service disruption on your route, riders can use the trip planning function in the transit app or Google Maps to find an alternate route. Simply type in where you are and where you want to go.
Saskatoon Transit thanks riders for their patience during this challenging time.

Phase 1 of ePermitting launches with online building, development and plumbing permits.
February 28, 2022 - 9:44am
Starting March 1, 2022, building, development and plumbing permits can be done completely online through the City of Saskatoon’s new ePermitting system. This new ePermitting system will let people apply for permits, track the progress of the application and even request inspections all digitally – reducing the need for in-person visits to City Hall and increasing transparency around the permitting process.
“The ePermitting system will allow the permitting process to become inherently digital,” says Kara Fagnou, Director of Building Standards. “It houses a vast library of pre-configured permit types to meet most business needs, includes email notifications that are automatically triggered and offers mobile capacity to support field inspection staff.”
Service Saskatoon and Building Standards staff will still be available via phone, or where needed, in person, but the ePermitting system will remove the need for most residents and businesses to travel to City Hall for permitting assistance.
“The launch of ePermitting is a key step for Building Standards toward its goal of being a national leader in permit turnaround times,” says Fagnou. “We are always looking for ways to streamline and improve our business processes. To support ePermitting, we have also streamlined our internal workflows and updated many of our procedures to help meet customers’ needs in the most efficient way possible.”
For more information, please visit saskatoon.ca/buildingstandards, or call 306.975.2645. Customers can register an account and login to the ePermitting system starting March 1 at saskatoon.ca/ePermitting.

Cold weather continues to affect Transit service
February 24, 2022 - 6:25am
The cold temperatures continue to cause shortages of buses and delays.
Cold temperatures can cause things like the ‘check engine’ light to turn on and cause condensation in the air system which may freeze valves leading to suspension issues or frozen brakes. In either situation, to ensure buses are safe to operate, a mechanic must verify the condition of the bus or complete any repairs before it can return to the road.
Before leaving to catch the bus, check for service alerts on the Transit app or Google Maps Transit on desktop. “Pin” the routes taken most often in the Transit app to receive push notifications about service disruptions. Service alert information can also be found at SaskatoonTransit.ca on twitter @stoontransit or by calling 306.975.3100.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
#ActOnReconciliation on Friday, February 25th
February 24, 2022 - 2:20am
- Wearing your EveryChildMatters shirt or any other orange shirt.
- Taking a step towards becoming an Indigenous A-L-L-Y by posting this Indigenous Ally Poster in spaces where discussions take place about work and community. Alternately, choose another Reconciliation action.
- Using the hashtag #ActOnReconciliation, share the action you’re taking on social media.
Following the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR) on September 30, 2021, the Saskatoon Tribal Council has initiated a campaign called #ActOnReconciliation. It’s intended to harness the momentum of NDTR and Orange Shirt Day (also September 30) and keep Reconciliation top of mind all year long. The campaign calls for action and awareness on the last Friday of each month in 2022.
The campaign coincides with a time when the devastating discoveries of unmarked graves at former residential schools keep coming. Last week, another 54 potential unmarked residential school gravesites were located 350 kilometres southeast of Saskatoon on Keeseekoose First Nation outside Kamsack, Saskatchewan. The gravesites were at the former location of the Fort Pelly and St. Philip’s residential schools.
The City is supporting the #ActOnReconciliation campaign by suggesting a specific Reconciliation action for each month. As well, to further heighten awareness, the City will apply an orange filter to their social media accounts and light the following civic facilities in orange: City Hall, SaskTel Centre, and the Prairie Wind art installation outside the Remai Modern.
#ActOnReconciliation – February Action
On Friday, February 25th, demonstrate your commitment to Reconciliation by:
In order to establish and maintain a mutually respectful relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) found that “there has to be awareness of the past, an acknowledgement of the harm that has been inflicted, atonement for the causes, and action to change behaviour.”
The City has been actively engaged – as a municipality, co-chair of Reconciliation Saskatoon, and through other community partnerships – in efforts to help raise awareness about Reconciliation and in providing opportunities to participate. Learn more at saskatoon.ca/Indigenous.

Have your say! Tree protection survey open for public input
February 23, 2022 - 1:00pm
Saskatoon’s urban forest significantly contributes to the community’s quality of life by adding character and beauty to the city, purifying the air and enriching the environment. The City currently owns and maintains over 107,000 trees within boulevards, centre medians and parks.
The City’s new Urban Forestry Management Plan, approved by City Council in 2021, recommends the development of a Tree Protection Bylaw to improve the City’s ability to protect trees on public property and educate the community about their protection.
From Wednesday, February 23 to Sunday, March 13, residents are invited to provide feedback on the development of a Tree Protection Bylaw for Saskatoon.
Tree Protection Online Survey
Open February 23 to March 13, 2022
Visit the Tree Protection Bylaw Engage Page at saskatoon.ca/engage/tree-protection-bylaw to complete the survey.
Feedback from the public survey and stakeholders will be used alongside research from other communities to seek City Council’s approval to draft a Tree Protection Bylaw for Saskatoon. Engagement results and project updates will be shared on the Tree Protection Bylaw Engage Page.

This Pink Shirt Day, the City of Saskatoon renews its commitment to working together and creating an inclusive workplace where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has affected us all and highlighted the importance of being kind and respectful of one another. By wearing a pink shirt on this day, we stand together against bullying and advocate for kindness, respect, and inclusivity,” says Terry Schmidt, General Manager of Transportation & Construction.
The City of Saskatoon will be showing their support on the day by encouraging staff to wear pink to raise awareness and providing staff with education and tools on workplace bullying and how to report it.
Watch for Saskatoon Transit vehicles who can be spotted around the city sporting pink t-shirt decals. Roadways, Fleet & Support have also added pink shirt decals to their trucks and graders to raise awareness of the day.

Use caution on streets and sidewalks Sunday; rain, light snow and temperature drop expected
February 19, 2022 - 10:00am
With snow melting in plus temperatures Saturday afternoon and a mix of rain and light snow through the evening and into the night, and a big drop in temperature overnight, streets and sidewalks will be icy on Sunday. Please drive carefully and use caution on sidewalks and across parking lots.
City crews with sanders will be using de-icing material as needed and then sand as the temperature drops, for traction at high-traffic locations on Circle Drive, freeways and high traffic intersections.
18 sanders will be spreading de-icing materials Saturday and Sunday, focusing on Saskatoon’s highest traffic streets, bridge decks and intersections. Please watch for their blue and amber flashing lights and leave room for road equipment to do their work.
Rut shaving in back lanes and on skipped local streets continues during the day through the weekend, with snow removal on priority streets on-going at night.

Snow clearing and sidewalk safety reminders during freeze-thaw conditions
February 18, 2022 - 10:30am
- Clear snow before it settles, hardens and packs-down
- Chip ice during the day when it is soft and easier to break
- Using sand or salt to increase traction and/or melt ice from the sidewalk
- Keep snow on your yard to keep drains and curbs clear
As we enter another freeze-thaw cycle this weekend, the City would like to remind residents to be safe while clearing snow and ice from sidewalks and other areas. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
Keeping sidewalks safe for pedestrians
Be a good neighbour and help prevent slips and falls by clearing sidewalks adjacent to your property within 48 hours from when any snow, ice or debris builds up.
What you can do:
Preventing a fall
If you encounter snow and/or ice on the sidewalk, walk like a penguin!
Keep your weight over your front leg, take small steps and maintain a shoulder-width foot separation with your toes angled outwards; doing this will increase your stability and helps reduce the risk of a fall.
Help our firefighters
If you have a fire hydrant located on or near your property, help our firefighters by keeping the hydrant free of snow and ice. Please clear a one metre (3 feet) perimeter around it. In an emergency, seconds count; this will help firefighters locate and efficiently connect to the hydrant in the event that you or your neighbours experience a fire emergency.
For more information, visit saskatoon.ca/goodneighbour.
