Fire dispatchers immediately requested the response of an energy provider while fire crews performed searches of the home to ensure all occupants were removed from the dangerous environment; fire crews were required to breach one interior door to confirm that no occupants remained inside. While searching the home, additional readings of 160 PPM and 190 PPM were received.
Firefighter-paramedics used a non-invasive medical assessment tool on scene to measure the carboxyhemoglobin level in the blood of the three patients before continuing medical care while enroute to the hospital in the ambulance.
Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless, and tasteless gas. Symptoms resulting from prolonged exposure to carbon monoxide include headache, fatigue, confusion, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. When undetected and left untreated, carbon monoxide can result in permanent injury or death. In an emergency, seconds count; a functioning carbon monoxide alarm can be the difference in preventing a tragedy in your home.

Apartment fire at 530 25th Street East
January 26, 2020 - 6:54 pm
Apartment fire at 530 25th Street East
For immediate release: January 26, 2020
At 3: 23 this afternoon the Saskatoon Fire Department received a residential fire signal at a thirteen story residential apartment building. The initial arriving Engine company officer found nothing showing from the exterior of the building. Crews entering the building located smoke on the third floor from a fire confined to a single residential suite. Fire crews evacuated most residents from the building, those with mobility issues were sheltered in their suites.
Upon entering into the fire suite, fire crews noted the fire had been extinguished by the buildings fire suppression, sprinkler system. However, heavy smoke remained throughout the third floor. As a result higher than normal levels of Carbon Monoxide were noted on the third floor and above. Those residents who exited the building were sheltered in the neighboring YWCA building until it was deemed safe to re-enter their suites.
Fire Crews conducted Positive Pressure Ventilation floor by floor to evacuate any smoke and toxic gasses. Measures were also take to prevent any excessive water damage from the buildings fire suppression system. Once CO levels throughout the build returned to zero residents were allowed to return to their suites.
A Fire Department Investigator has deemed the cause of the fire as a result of a candle which ignited stationery on a desk. Due to the significant amount of water from the sprinklers system, damage is estimated at $100,000.00
Response, recovery, resilience: emergency preparedness and regional partnerships aided in train derailment north of Saskatoon

- Voice call to your landline
One year ago, on January 22, 2019 at approximately 9:26 in the morning, a 52-car Canadian National Railway (CN) train transporting grain product derailed across a major thoroughfare north of Saskatoon. The Saskatoon Fire Department responded with 18 different fire apparatus staffed by dozens of firefighters. Working together with neighbouring fire departments, crews worked from both sides of the derailed train to neutralize the hazard. Four news releases were issued by the Saskatoon Fire Department, the agency in command of the incident throughout its duration. The Emergency Management Organization, as part of the Saskatoon Fire Department response, responded with the mobile command unit to support the process of incident command and to coordinate response and recovery efforts.
The Emergency Management Organization (EMO) works with City of Saskatoon colleagues, community partners, government agencies, businesses, non-profit groups, first responders, and citizens to promote and strengthen emergency management and business continuity. Working collaboratively with these groups, the EMO coordinates preparedness, planning, response, and recovery with the goal of making Saskatoon a safer and more resilient community.
An incident of this magnitude is complex; no single agency or organization can respond independently to an incident as demanding as a train derailment. During the January 2019 response, 28 different agencies or organizations were involved in the recovery and rehabilitation efforts. When multiple agencies and organizations are involved, the Incident Command System (ICS) must be implemented. ICS is a standardized on-site management system designed to enable effective, efficient incident management by integrating a combination of facilities, equipment, personnel, procedures, and communications operating within a common organizational structure.
This event impacted a number of municipalities, identifying the need for a regional resilience plan. The City of Saskatoon continually evaluates and improves emergency response plans, working together with partner agencies and organizations to identify the needs of large scale responses involving multiple responders.
The mobile command unit was deployed 36 times in 2019 resulting in 152 hours of activation.

Winter weather fire prevention for your home and vehicle
January 15, 2020 - 3:20 pm
- Always plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet; never use an extension cord,
- Be sure to turn off and unplug space heaters when you leave the room or are going to sleep,
- Never use space heaters to dry combustible items,
- Keep children, pets, and combustible items at least one metre away from heating equipment,
- Place a screen in front of your wood-burning or gas fireplace,
- Keep all heat sources free from dust, lint, and chemical product,
- Never use your oven to heat your home, and
- Have a reputable and qualified company install and maintain all heating equipment; inspect gas or oil burning furnaces annually.
- Always use a heavy-duty, three wire, three pronged, extension cord that is rated for outdoor use,
- Be sure to check your block heater cord, as well as your extension cord, to make sure that neither are cracked or frayed,
- Always keep your block heater plug covered with its protective cap when not in use,
- Be sure to thoroughly clean off the prongs on both the block heater plug, as well as the extension cord ends,
- Check to make sure your block heater cord is positioned through the proper channels and is not pinched under the car or wrapped around sharp metal objects in the engine compartment, and
- Never drive over your extension cord; this may cause additional wear on the cord and/or its plugs.
With winter in Saskatchewan, we’re never sure what to expect – from extreme temperatures to potentially heavy snowfall, residents and visitors of Saskatoon must be prepared for it all. The Saskatoon Fire Department emphasizes the importance of the following tips and recommendations on home and vehicle safety for winter weather:
Heating Equipment:
Outdoor Home Vents/Pipes:
After a heavy snowfall, freeze-thaw cycle, or extreme cold temperatures, check your furnace, water heater, chimney, and dryer vents and pipes to verify that they are free of snow and ice buildup or other obstructions. Obstructed vents and pipes can negatively affect your home’s function and can result in the accumulation of carbon monoxide inside your home.
Vehicle Block Heaters:
If you happen to drive away while your vehicle is still plugged in, remember to check the block heater, extension cord, and electrical outlet for damage and, if necessary, replace the damaged components before the vehicle is plugged in again.
Stay warm, Saskatoon! In an emergency, call 911 immediately.
SAFETY TIP!
After a snowfall, verify that your house number is cleared off and is visible from the street; this will help firefighter-paramedics locate you in the event of an emergency.

The crew immediately used two attack lines to begin battling the fire from two sides of the house through the basement windows. As additional manpower arrived on scene and a water supply established, the firefighters made headway with extinguishment of the main body of fire. Once it was determined interior conditions were tenable, crews attempted to continue with an interior attack strategy but the floor had been extensively damaged and it was deemed unsafe to make entry on the main floor.
It had been reported that there may possibly be one tenant inside the basement suite which had been totally engulfed in fire before the Departments arrival on scene. A primary search could not be completed until conditions were deemed safer and visibility improved. Information was soon obtained indicating the occupant had been staying at another location for days.
The structure had many void spaces in the walls along with wood chip insulation. It was very difficult to extinguish all hotspots and fire extension, but they managed to contain the fire to the lower levels of the home, preventing it from extending into the attic. The work involved was extensive due to the difficult structure and the extreme cold. Two more Engines did respond to the scene later in the incident to relieve exhausted crews. It took just over three hours to achieve an under control.
One firefighter received a minor injury and was sent to the hospital for a puncture wound which was obtained while working around the exterior of the structure.
Investigators from Saskatoon Fire Department and Saskatoon Police were on scene. The cause has not yet been determined nor has a damage estimate been given.
Ringing in the 2020 New Year with fireworks
December 30, 2019 - 9:42 am
- Carefully read and follow the manufacturer instructions,
- Exercise increased caution when handling and discharging any type of firework,
- Choose your location wisely, noting that fireworks can only be discharged on private property,
- Ensure your location is free of overhead obstructions, is clear side-to-side, and is a safe distance from combustible materials,
- Familiarize yourself with the space requirements for the type of firework being discharged; requirements vary depending on the firework type,
- Be sure to properly stabilize the firework according to manufacturer direction, and
- Keep in mind that you are solely responsible for any debris that may land on your spectators or another’s property.
The Saskatoon Fire Department would like to remind residents and visitors of safe practices for purchasing, enjoying, and disposing of fireworks. This New Year’s Eve, Tuesday, December 31st, low-hazard fireworks can only be discharged on private property between the hours of dusk on New Year’s Eve and 12:15 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
Low-hazard fireworks are designed for public recreational use and include roman candles and sparklers, among others, and travel less than 50m (160ft) high.
High-hazard fireworks are designed for professionals and can only be purchased by persons holding a valid Fireworks Supervisor – Level I or Level II card issued by Natural Resources Canada.
Residents and visitors are reminded of the risks and obligations associated with fireworks:
After dusk, when you are ready to discharge the fireworks, ensure that it is not windy and that all spectators are safely located to observe the display. Remember to always light the fuse at its tip; other than sparklers, never light or hold a lit firework in your hand. Always have a water supply available when discharging fireworks.
Wait at least 30 minutes before beginning the clean-up process. At that time, it’s a good idea to dispose of used fireworks and debris in a pail of water. Never try to relight or fix the fuse on fireworks that didn’t go off.
Always be extremely careful when discharging fireworks. The debris or smoldering embers could cause injuries, property damage, and/or fires.
Currently, there is no fire ban in effect for Saskatoon. It’s always recommended that residents and visitors celebrate at public firework displays that are hosted by a trusted organization; however, if you choose to celebrate New Year’s Eve by sending off your own fireworks, please follow all safety practices and only send them off within the specified time frame.
The Saskatoon Fire Department wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable New Year’s Eve!
House fire - 906 8th Avenue North
December 26, 2019 - 2:19 am
At 11:25 pm, December 25th a tenant returned home to find two small fires in his house. He alerted the Saskatoon Fire Department and indicated that one of the other tenants was unaccounted for. Three Engines, one Ladder Truck, one Rescue Unit, and one Battalion Chief were dispatched and arrived on scene in approximately 4 minutes.
The first arriving crew noted smoke coming from a side door and initiated an interior attack, a second crew was directed to back them up and a third to begin a search. Fire crews used a thermal imaging camera to perform searches of each room in the house, confirming there to be no further extension of the fire, as well as no remaining occupants or pets. Ventilation was conducted to clear the house of smoke and carbon monoxide. The fire was controlled within 30 minutes of the first arriving fire crew.
Upon exiting the house, fire crews performed a gross decontamination of their gear to minimize the effect of toxins.
Utilities were disconnected for safety of Firefighters and utility technicians were called to the scene to re-establish services.
A Fire and Police Investigators are on scene to determine the cause. A damage estimate has not been given and there were no reported injuries due to this incident.
Holiday considerations: candles and cooking
December 24, 2019 - 11:19 am
The holidays are a time of celebration and cheer; with traditions and gatherings filling the homes of many, the Saskatoon Fire Department reminds residents to be mindful of fire safety in and around their homes when decking the halls.
Candles:
Many people choose to use candles year-round; however, the holiday season tends to bring an increase in the number of households lighting candles as part of their holiday tradition or as a decorative addition to their home. Whatever the purpose, always be sure to put the candle out when you are not around to enjoy it. Unattended candles have the potential to make your holiday not so merry and bright. Take the time to consider where you are placing your candle and what combustible materials may be around. Additionally, battery-powered candles can provide a realistic glow while reducing the risk of a fire in your home.
Cooking:
Holiday meals and seasonal baking are must-haves each year; however, the Saskatoon Fire Department reminds the head-chefs, top bakers, and those aspiring to be to remain present while cooking and/or baking this holiday season. Stay in the kitchen, focused and alert on your task, to prevent unintentionally inviting the Saskatoon Fire Department to your home for a burnt offering this holiday season. For meals that may take additional time to cook and/or prepare, the use of a timer can act as a reminder in monitoring your meal.
The Saskatoon Fire Department wishes all a safe holiday season; from our halls to yours, happy holidays!
In an emergency, call 911 immediately.
House fire in Mayfair area
December 23, 2019 - 2:42 am
At 01:17 this morning, Saskatoon Fire Department received reports of flames showing from a two-story house on the 1600 Block of Avenue C North. Three Engines, one Ladder Truck, one Rescue Unit, and one Battalion Chief responded. The first Engine arrived on scene in three and one-half minutes.
Flames were on the exterior, second level, rear of the home. The house was boarded up and appeared vacant. The crew laid an attack hose line and immediately extinguished the flames, preventing further fire extension to the interior. Once the fire was extinguished, the initial crew now backed up by firefighters with a second hose line, entered the structure to verify there were no occupants inside and extinguish any hotspots inside the walls and ceiling.
Utilities had to be disconnected for safety of Firefighters due to an arcing power line at the rear of the house. Saskatoon Light and Power were on scene very quickly to assist with de-energizing and disconnecting the line.
A Fire Investigator is on scene with Police to determine the cause. A damage estimate has not been given and there were no reported injuries due to this incident.

Just before lunch, at 11:34, Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a three vehicle collision at 8th Street and Cumberland Avenue. Two Engines and one Rescue Unit responded.
The first Engine arrived on scene in less than four minutes. The crew ensured a safe work area due to high traffic flowing by the scene. As soon as it was verified there were not any trapped or severely injured occupants, the second Engine and Rescue Unit downgraded their response while enroute, so traffic flow was not unnecessarily disrupted.
Fire crews ensured there were no hazards to occupants or emergency workers on scene, then cleaned up any remaining debris and leaking fluids.
Saskatoon Fire Department would like to remind people to continue to drive safely and consider increased caution when passing emergency workers.
Happy Holiday Season to All!

Motor Vehicle Collision - Fire Engine vs. Passenger Car
December 19, 2019 - 1:07 pm
At approximately 10:21 p.m. on Wednesday, December 18, 2019, the Saskatoon Fire Department dispatched one fire engine from Fire Station No. 6 to a report of a middle-aged female experiencing chest pain.
While traveling with its emergency equipment activated, the fire engine was involved in a side impact motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Grosvenor Avenue and 8th Street East. The commanding fire officer immediately requested the dispatch of a secondary fire engine to respond to the initial emergency medical incident.
Preliminary review indicates that a passenger car collided with the driver-side cab of the fire engine. Both the car and the fire engine had to be towed from the scene. There were no injuries to fire department personnel or to the occupant of the car as a result of the collision.
This incident remains under investigation with the Saskatoon Police Service and is under review by the Saskatoon Fire Department.
It is expected that the fire engine will be out-of-service for an extended period of time.

Large Residential Structure Fire - 519 Bayfield Crescent
December 16, 2019 - 5:15 pm
At approximately 11:37 p.m. on Sunday, December 15, 2019, the Saskatoon Fire Department received multiple 911 calls alerting to a possible residential structure fire at 519 Bayfield Crescent in the Briarwood neighbourhood; it was reported to fire dispatchers that smoke was visibly exiting from the rear of the structure.
Three fire engines, one rescue unit, one aerial ladder truck, and one battalion chief were dispatched for immediate response. Upon arrival, confirmation of a working structure fire was made and one additional fire engine and one fire investigation unit were requested by the commanding fire officer. A fifth fire engine was later dispatched and committed to this incident. Multiple other fire crews were required to respond throughout the duration of this incident to provide rehabilitation and relief for firefighters working on scene.
Fire crews were confronted with heavy and continuous heat and smoke at each attempt to make entry to the structure. The deteriorating structural integrity pushed firefighters to retreat from entry and commence a defensive fire attack strategy. With wind driving its spread, the fire proved challenging to access forcing firefighters to breach exterior doors and windows to conduct ventilation and apply suppression from the outside in a number of locations. All utilities to the structure were shut down with some utility supply lines sustaining significant damage as a result of the fire. The fire was brought fully under control at approximately 7:24 a.m. on Monday, December 16, 2019, with fire crews conducting overhaul efforts until a complete loss stopped was called at approximately 10:30 a.m.
Fire crews undertook a significant accountability process for the entire duration of this incident to ensure the safety and locations of fire personnel working on scene. There were no injuries to fire personnel or members of the public as a result of this incident.
The structure has been labeled unsafe for entry and is considered a total loss at an estimated $550,000. Due to the deteriorated structural integrity, including a compromised roof and collapsed floor system, a cause has not been determined; however, this incident remains under investigation by both the Saskatoon Fire Department and the Saskatoon Police Service.
Saskatoon civilian saves a life, thank-you!
December 16, 2019 - 1:07 pm
The Saskatoon Fire Department is pleased to recognize Mr. Dave Hume, a civilian whose instinctive actions and proactive training resulted in a remarkable and positive outcome to an emergency cardiac event.
On September 3, 2019 at approximately 10:27 a.m., the Saskatoon Fire Department was alerted to a working cardiac arrest in the Umea Vast Park, behind the Lawson Heights Mall, located at 134 Primrose Drive. One fire engine staffed with a crew of four was immediately dispatched from Fire Station No. 7 on Wanuskewin Road. Arriving on scene in less than three minutes, the crew found the patient, 70 year-old Mr. John Wiebe, connected to a public automated external defibrillator (AED) with bystanders performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Mr. Dave Hume was among those bystanders. He has an extensive background in community advocacy for public knowledge and access to AEDs and CPR training. Mr. Hume coordinated the efforts of fellow bystanders, including providing instruction on where to locate and how to connect the AED, in addition to beginning CPR on Mr. Wiebe. Those efforts helped save a life. It was also Mr. Hume’s advocacy and fundraising that allowed for the availability of an AED at this location. Awareness, accessibility, and adequate training to members of the public on CPR and AEDs can bridge the small, but life-changing lapse in time until firefighter-paramedics arrive to provide patient care.
The Saskatoon Fire Department has adopted the National Fire Protection Association’s 1710 model, Standard for the Organization and Deployment of Fire Suppression Operations, Emergency Medical Operations, and Special Operations to the Public by Career Fire Departments, which provides a benchmark standard of a four-minute response time that is to be met at greater than or equal to the 90th percentile.
With nine fire stations throughout Saskatoon, the Saskatoon Fire Department takes great pride in its ability to respond to any location in the City within four minutes. Currently staffing 140 Primary Care Paramedics (PCP), 50 Medical First Responders, and having all staff trained to perform CPR and operate AEDs, the Saskatoon Fire Department follows industry best practice of a four person team conducting high performance CPR. Emphasis is placed on starting CPR as quickly as possible, having minimal interruption, and a dedicated role of each rescuer; a multi-faceted approach in a simultaneous response, rescuers begin CPR, connect an AED, and provide airway management and supplemental oxygen in working towards the best possible outcome for the patient. As indicated by the Heart & Stroke Foundation, rescuers will perform high quality chest compressions at full capacity for approximately two minutes, at which time it is in the interest of the patient’s best care to cycle through duties, as done when conducting high performance CPR.
This incident demonstrates the importance of community members participating in adequate CPR training and familiarizing themselves with the operation and location of public AEDs.
Thank-you, Mr. Dave Hume, for your instinctive actions on September 3, 2019 and your continued community advocacy in the areas of public awareness, accessibility, and adequate training for CPR and AED usage.
Recreational pond use – winter 2019/20
December 12, 2019 - 2:15 pm
The City of Saskatoon operates several storm water retention ponds in neighbourhoods throughout the City. Many residents choose to use these ponds for recreational purposes, including skating and ice hockey. It is reminded that individuals who choose to use the storm water retention ponds for recreational purposes assume all associated risk in doing so.
The Saskatoon Fire Department regularly tests and monitors ice thickness at ponds around the City to verify its integrity. The ice must reach a minimum thickness of at least 8 inches to be considered safe for public recreational use. Signage posted at each pond will indicate whether or not the pond is safe for use. Be sure to check the posted signage each time you are considering using the pond. The sign will display a “No Skating” icon until the ice has been tested and is confirmed safe for public use, at which time a “Skating Permitted” icon will be displayed on the sign.
Community members choosing to use the ponds for recreational purposes are responsible for any maintenance of the ice that may be required, including shoveling and flooding, as well as user safety.
For more information regarding the Recreational Uses of Storm Water Retention Ponds policy, visit www.saskatoon.ca/ponds.
Always exercise an elevated level of caution when using any ice-covered body of water for recreational purposes.

notifynow sends public safety message, residents encouraged to sign up!
November 14, 2019 - 2:02 pm
For the first time since the notifynow emergency alert system was launched in 2014 an alert was issued city-wide to Saskatoon residents last night. The alert was issued at the request of Saskatoon Police to advise the public of the escape of two inmates, both considered to be violent, from the Regional Psychiatric Centre in the city’s northwest.
“This is the first time the target audience for a notifynow alert was the entire City of Saskatoon,” says Pamela Goulden-McLeod, Director of Emergency Management. “Last night, the request for a city-wide alert was made by Saskatoon Police and we were able to communicate that emergency message with over 55,000 contacts in a short period of time.”
notifynow provides timely, trusted and targeted public safety messages for incidents that require immediate attention by the public.
“There are a number of internal criteria that we consider when determining when and how we send out notifynow alerts to residents,” says Goulden-McLeod. “Saskatoon Police wanted to encourage residents to report any suspicious activity, so the decision was made to send the alert by email and text.”
notifynow messages help residents be better prepared and less vulnerable in the event of an emergency, be it city-wide or localized to one city-block. Residents are able to sign up using the method of communication they prefer to receive.
“We really encourage residents to create an account and provide their contact information for text, email and phone. We have roughly 272,000 people living in Saskatoon and only 25,000 who’ve gone in and signed up,” says Goulden-McLeod. “It’s also a good reminder to residents to check their profile on notifynow and make sure their information is up to date.”
The notifynow system is tested twice a year. The next notifynow test is Wednesday, December 4 at 10:00 a.m. To sign-up or to find out more about notifynow, visit Saskatoon.ca/notifynow or call 306-975-3210.
Saskatoon Fire Department primary care improves residents' quality of life for nearly 30 years
November 14, 2019 - 10:28 am
More than a firefighting service, the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) has been improving residents’ quality of life through emergency medical care for nearly 30 years.
SFD first introduced Emergency Medical Technicians in 1990, and now has over 140 Firefighter-Primary Care Paramedics providing emergency medical care throughout the city.
“We’re proud of our role as part of a primary care team of first responders, increasing the quality of life for residents and providing a level of service residents have come to expect,” says Len Protz, Battalion Chief. “With nine strategically located stations, we’re able to respond quickly when someone in our community requires urgent care.”
SFD received just over 14,000 calls to date this year, roughly 40 per cent requiring emergency medical care. In certain circumstances, the firefighter-paramedics are able to perform lifesaving interventions, which includes the administration of medications.
Yearly statistical comparisons:
Year |
Volume of Calls |
Emergency Medical Service Calls |
2019 YTD |
14,046 |
5,821 |
2018 |
14,308 |
6,199 |
2017 |
14,087 |
5,884 |
“SFD provides emergency response and protection for nearly 42 billion dollars’ worth of physical assets, but what that doesn’t include is our people,” says Protz. “We’re continuously looking at ways we can improve the services we provide to citizens, keeping their safety and wellness at the forefront.”
Treatment and medications administered by firefighter-paramedics have expanded over the past thirty years. Notably, the introduction of the automated external defibrillator (AED) in the mid-90s and Naloxone, an important drug used to combat the opioid overdose crisis, in January 2017.
Other medications administered by firefighter-paramedics include: Dextrose for hypoglycemic diabetic emergencies, Epinephrine (Adrenaline) for severe allergic reactions, and Atrovent and Salbutamol (bronchodilators) used for persons in severe respiratory distress.
Most recently, in conjunction with the Saskatchewan College of Paramedics protocols, the SFD added Penthrox, a non-opioid gaseous analgesic used for pain relief, to be able to treat persons experiencing moderate to severe pain associated with trauma.
Building and upgrading skills has also been a focus over the years. On January 1, 2018, SFD made the transition from Emergency Medical Technicians to Primary Care Paramedics (2011 National Occupancy Competency Profile) with nearly half of SFD’s operational staff registered with the Saskatchewan College of Paramedics. In addition, more than 50 staff who were previously Primary Care Paramedics or Emergency Medical Technicians are now Registered Medical First Responders, a further upgrade of skills and lifesaving abilities available within the Department.
Through continued working relationships with the International Association of Firefighters Local 80, Saskatchewan Health Authority, Medavie Health Services West and the Saskatoon Police Service, SFD works toward the common goal of community service in saving lives and serving the citizens of our community.
The Saskatoon Fire Department’s emergency medical services further the City’s Strategic Goal of Quality of Life for Citizens in prioritizing the safety of the entire community.
