Fire Community Support team launches with expanded staff and services
July 12, 2024 - 4:16 pm
The Community Support Program (CSP) operated under the management of the Business Improvement Districts since 2012. As of July 1, the management of the CSP has been transferred to the Saskatoon Fire Department, now known as the Fire Community Support (FCS) team.
In the 2024 Budget, six additional staff members were added to provide up to 11,700 hours of transit support, aligning with the program's transition to the Saskatoon Fire Department.
The role of the FCS workers is similar to the more familiar CSP but with the addition of six full-time staff members and increased support for Saskatoon Transit. The FCS team will routinely patrol and engage with individuals in the business areas, on Saskatoon Transit buses, and at bus terminals. They will also ride and patrol targeted bus routes where incidents are more frequent. These routes will be selected based on data collected by the City.
The goal of the FCS team is to connect and build relationships with residents and visitors, including those experiencing challenging situations such as homelessness, mental health issues and addictions. FCS workers are trained with de-escalation skills and will have immediate direct contact with emergency services if necessary.
The FCS workers completed their training this week and have started their full-time rotation. The FCS team will operate two battalions, each consisting of one FCS Supervisor and five FCS members, to provide seven-day-a-week coverage. Each battalion will alternate a four-on-four-off schedule. The start and stop times of these shifts will be based on operational requirements determined using collected data. These shifts will fall primarily between 8:00 a.m. and 12:15 a.m. the following day.
The FCS workers are expected to have a greater presence in the community and on transit routes. If residents are out in the community and see someone in distress, are lost, or happen to see negative street activity, the FCS team can be reached at 306-382-6935.

Upon arrival, fire crews were met by hospital staff to determine the location of the incident. The chemical spill was in a non-ventilated room. The crew isolated the area and directed people to their muster points.
The hazmat team was able to identify the substance as Rapicide – a hospital grade disinfectant, which was leaking from a machine. The hazmat technicians turned the machine off and cleaned up the leaked disinfectant. The room was set up for ventilation as the hazmat team moved contaminated materials into an over pack barrel and then transferred the barrel outside for further disposal. The affected area continues to be ventilated and the scene has been transferred to the City Hospital staff.
Four individuals were identified as being exposed to the chemical. As a precaution, the individuals were assessed by the firefighter paramedics and no injuries or illness were presented.

Today the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) is pleased to announce that Assistant Chief Doug Wegren (WEE’-grin) will assume the role of Fire Chief effective May 16. Chief Wegren will replace Morgan Hackl who retired in March after 36 years of service with SFD.
“Doug is a strong and collaborative leader who has built close ties with the Saskatoon community,” says Jeff Jorgenson, City Manager. “He has an impressive 25-year career at SFD progressing through increasing levels of job responsibility and accountability. Through his work at SFD, he has developed strong relationships with colleagues and community partners and demonstrated exceptional leadership across all areas of the fire service.”
Wegren attended the University of Saskatchewan, graduating in 1994 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, and later received his Fire Service Administration certificate and Fire Service Leadership certificate from Dalhousie University.
In 1999, Wegren started his career with SFD as a Firefighter and EMT. He progressed through the ranks, taking on a variety of roles and responsibilities including F.I.R.E. Cadet Instructor, Fire Service Instructor, Restorative Action Lead, Assistant Chief of Logistics, and Acting Fire Chief. Wegren also played an active role in the City's emergency COVID response. He participated in the City of Saskatoon's Emergency Command Centre, Emergency Management Operations planning section, SFD's Tactical Operations Centre, and engaged with the vulnerable sector.
“I am humbled by the opportunity to lead such an esteemed fire service in the community that I call home,” says Wegren. “As the new Fire Chief, I am committed to working collaboratively with our partners and all orders of government to meet the evolving needs of our community. Saskatoon Fire Department hosts Prairie Region TRANSCAER event at regional training facility
May 14, 2024 - 2:00 pm
In partnership with the Railway Association of Canada, the Saskatoon Fire Department (SFD) is proud to host a Transportation Community Awareness and Emergency Response (TRANSCAER) training event from May 15-17, 2024, focused on road and railway response.
The road and railway training will take place at the Regional Training Facility in Corman Park over three days and feature presentations by railway personnel, as well as hands-on learning opportunities. The training is intended to inform emergency responders about the different features of railway tank cars and evaluate teams’ emergency response plans by working through scenarios, assessing available equipment and identifying ways to quickly communicate with residents.
“Effective emergency response begins with planning and preparation,” says Anthony Tataryn, Assistant Fire Chief. “SFD is proud to bring a TRANSCAER event back to Saskatchewan. It’s a great opportunity for emergency responders to engage in transportation emergency training and gain valuable hands-on experience. This collaboration with industry experts and emergency response organizations has truly fulfilled the intention of our Regional Training Facility and we’re eager to host more training events like this in the future for the greater benefit of our communities.”
“The Railway Association of Canada and our member railways are proud to partner with CIAC, its members and partners to ensure the safe transportation of Dangerous Goods by rail. Engaging with First Responders and providing hands-on training is essential to keeping communities safe,” says Scott Croome, Director, Dangerous Goods, Railway Association of Canada.
