House fire - 143 Nordstrum Road
April 23, 2019 - 6:14 am
Saskatoon Fire Department received multiple 911 calls at approx. 01:40, reporting a house on fire at the rear of 143 Nordstrum Road. Three Engines, one Ladder Company, one Rescue Unit, and the Battalion Chief responded to the scene.
Crews arrived on scene in less than four minutes. Smoke and flame were visible from the rear of the single family house including involvement of the second storey. Incident command was notified that all occupants of the home had been evacuated.
Fire crews were faced with windy conditions which accelerated the spread of the fire into the structure and posed a risk to neighbouring houses. An exterior attack was initiated to contain and control the main body of fire and protect adjacent structures.
Windy conditions and amount of fire involvement dictated a defensive strategy so rotation of crews was required throughout the night until conditions were safe enough to make entry. Crews remain on scene extinguishing hot spots and fire that extended into various areas of the main structure.
A Fire Investigator is on scene. Damage is extensive however an estimate is not available at this time. No injuries have been reported as a result of this fire.

Deck fire - 44 Lindsay Drive
April 17, 2019 - 4:55 pm
- Always use a deep ashtray or metal container to dispose of smoking materials, keeping it a safe distance from anything combustible,
- Never discard smoking materials in mulch, potted plants, grasses, leaves, or other easily combustible materials, and
- Douse smoking materials in water or sand to ensure they are safely out.
At approximately 11:43 this morning, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a single 911 call reporting a deck on fire at 44 Lindsay Drive.
Three Fire Engines, one Heavy Rescue Unit, one Aerial Ladder Truck, and one Battalion Chief were dispatched for immediate response.

All additional responding fire crews were canceled and the request for a Fire Investigation Unit was made. A fire crew checked for possible extension of the fire and monitored the smouldering debris until a Fire Investigator arrived on scene.
The occupants were not home at the time of the fire; however, later arrived to be interviewed by the Fire Investigator. No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.
The Fire Investigator has found the cause of the fire to be accidental in nature as a result of the improper disposal of smoking materials. Damage was confined to the deck and has been estimated at $500.
The Saskatoon Fire Department reminds residents to be mindful of safe practices when disposing of smoking materials:
Smoking material fires are preventable fires; be sure to properly put it out.
