Saskatoon Fire - News Releases

At approximately 1:45, the Saskatoon Fire Department was alerted to reports of a person in the water in the area between the Senator Sid Buckwold Bridge and the Victoria Bridge.

Two Water Rescue Units, one Fire Engine, and one Battalion Chief were immediately dispatched for response. 

Water rescue crews with the Saskatoon Fire Department are using sonar technology to identify any abnormalities in the water that should otherwise not be present. Water rescue divers are currently in the water; however, their search has remained inconclusive.

This incident is ongoing and additional information will be released as it becomes known.

Access to electricity in our everyday lives has become natural to many of us; however, the Saskatoon Fire Department advises caution regarding the safe use and care of electrical equipment.

Electrical considerations to make include:

• Always have electrical work done by a qualified electrician,
• Heat-producing appliances, such as coffee makers, toasters, or space heaters, should always be used independently when plugged into an outlet,
• Major appliances, such as refrigerators, ovens, washers, and dryers, should always be plugged directly into an outlet dedicated to that appliance,
• Have ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) installed in your kitchen, bathrooms, garage, and on all exterior outlets; GFCIs shut down an electrical circuit when it becomes a shock hazard,
• Have arc-fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs) installed in your home; AFCIs shut off electricity when a dangerous condition occurs, and
• Always use light bulbs with the appropriate wattage for their socket.

Remember to watch for the following indicators of a potential electrical issue around your home:

• Continued flickering or dimming lights,
• Sparks when plugging into an outlet,
• Burning smells when using an appliance,
• Discoloured and/or warm outlets,
• Frequently blown fuses and/or tripped breakers, and
• Tingling feelings when touching an appliance.

SAFETY TIP!

Extension cords are intended for temporary use only and can pose a serious hazard when used incorrectly. Never run extension cords across doorways or under carpets; choosing to do so not only increases the risk of a fire, but also a fall!

In an emergency, call 911 immediately.

At approximately 6:27 this morning, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call alerting to a single vehicle collision at a rural location near Highway 11 and Melness Road.

Call information prompted the immediate dispatch of two Fire Engines, one Heavy Rescue Unit, and one Battalion Chief. 

Upon arrival, fire crews observed a GMC Sierra pickup truck that had left the road and collided with a nearby tree. It was quickly confirmed that extrication would be required in order to rescue the lone male occupant from the vehicle. Immediately, fire crews laid a hose line to the work area in the event a fire were to ignite, and began work to stabilize and de-energize the truck. The lone male occupant was extricated from the vehicle and transported to hospital with undetermined injuries.

The Saskatoon Fire Department has now concluded its duties in relation to this incident. 

At approximately 10 AM this morning fire crews responded to the report of smoke and alarm bells ringing at 219 Avenue K South.

Three Engines, Ladder truck, Rescue truck, and a Battalion chief arrived on scene to find smoke on the 4th floor and a sprinkler head flowing.

The sprinkler head kept the fire under control until fire crews could extinguish the fire.

A fire investigator was called and determined that the fire was caused by children playing with smoking material.

Damage is estimated at 10,000.  

There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire.

At approximately 2:38 this afternoon, the Saskatoon Fire Department received multiple 911 calls reporting smoke exiting a multi-unit townhouse complex. The source unit was identified as 654 Gladmer Park.

Immediately dispatched were three Fire Engines, one Aerial Ladder Truck, one Heavy Rescue Unit, one Fire Investigation Unit, and one Battalion Chief. 

Fire crews observed heavy smoke inside the townhouse and visibly exiting through upper-level windows. Firefighters shut down the gas line to the source unit and utility technicians were requested to disconnect remaining utilities. An interior attack was initiated and a fire was quickly located and extinguished in the kitchen. Fire crews performed searches of the source unit, as well as adjoining units to ensure all occupants and pets were safely evacuated. Fire crews tested carbon monoxide (CO) levels around the complex, and ventilation fans were used to clear the source unit and its adjoining units of any remaining smoke or carbon monoxide.

There were no injuries reported as a result of this fire. Fire Investigators are working to determine a cause and damage estimate. 

At approximately 11:04 this morning, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a possible structure fire at 2225 Speers Avenue.

Immediately dispatched were three Fire Engines, one Aerial Ladder Truck, one Heavy Rescue Unit, and one Battalion Chief. 

Upon working with the caller, Fire Dispatchers identified for responding crews that the reported fire was outside of the structure in what appeared to be a dust collection appliance. Fire crews arrived on scene in just over three minutes and quickly extinguished the fire, containing the affected area to only the appliance. One civilian was treated for what is believed to be minor smoke inhalation as a result of the fire. 

There were no additional injuries or exposures as a result of this incident. A Fire Investigator has ruled the fire accidental with damage estimated at $500. 

Fire Investigators have determined that the fire, causing an estimated $120,000 in damage to a property located at 310 Cree Crescent, was accidental in nature. A Fire Investigator remains on this case to identify an exact cause.

At approximately 4:00 a.m. the Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a reported garage fire at 310 Cree Crescent. 3 fire engines, 1 aerial , 1 rescue truck, and a Battalion chief  responded to the incident.

It took crews approximately 30 minutes to get the fire under control. Damage is estimated at $120,000 which includes building and contents. Fire investigators are on scene to determine cause and origin. 

At approximately 4:00 am the Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a reported garage fire at 310 Cree Crescent. 3 fire engines, 1 aerial , 1 rescue truck, and a Battalion chief  responded to the incident.

It took crews approximately 30 minutes to get the fire under control. Damage is estimated at $120,000 which includes building and contents. Fire investigators are on scene to determine cause and origin. 

At approximately 1:00 pm Saskatoon Fire Department responded to the intersection of Circle Drive and Avenue C.N for a reported semi trailer that had rolled on its side. Two fire engines, one rescue truck, and a Battalion Chief responded to the incident. First arriving Officer had to determine what the cargo was to rule out any dangerous goods on board and to check for injuries. The cargo was industrial parts and there were no injuries reported. One Engine remained on scene until the scene was deemed safe.

The Investigator for the house fire earlier today at 3360 - 33rd Street West has concluded the fire to be incendiary.

Total damage is valued at $250,000, including both the house and the camper.
