Further investigation into this incident has identified that a secondary tenant occupying a separate suite in the home aided in alerting and evacuating a neighbouring tenant from the fire suite. The Saskatoon Fire Department recognizes the heroic actions taken by this individual in ensuring their own safety, as well as that of other community members.

A Fire Investigator has found that the fire at 1039 4th Street East was accidental in nature as a result of an unattended candle in a main floor bathroom. The home was equipped with working smoke alarms which woke the home's occupant and alerted to the fire. Damage has been estimated at $80,000.

Smoke alarms, including hard-wired ones, must be replaced every 10 years. Be sure to test your smoke alarms monthly, replacing the batteries annually or as needed throughout the year.

Remember to always put your candles out when you are not around to enjoy them. Consider the placement of your candles and what combustible materials may be around.

The Saskatoon Fire Department has now concluded its involvement in this incident.

At approximately 7:28 this morning, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a residential house on fire at 1039 4th Street East.

Three Fire Engines, one Heavy Rescue Unit, one Aerial Ladder Truck, one Fire Investigation Unit, and one Battalion Chief were dispatched for response. 

Upon arrival, fire crews confirmed visible smoke exiting the house with all occupants having self-evacuated. The gas line to the house was immediately disconnected and a system for ventilation was established. An attack group entered the house and extinguished a fire on the main floor. Ventilation was initiated to begin clearing the house of smoke while fire crews performed searches of each level. 

The Saskatoon Fire Department had multiple Firefighter Paramedics on scene from the responding engines; one occupant was in need of immediate medical attention as a result of the fire and was treated by Firefighter Paramedics before being transported to hospital for smoke inhalation.

A Fire Investigator remains on scene and has not yet identified a cause or provided a damage estimate.

Spring has sprung in Saskatoon; with warming weather, the Saskatoon Fire Department advises community members of considerations to make during the freeze-thaw cycle that has been occurring over the past month.

Many community members chose to use the City of Saskatoon’s storm water retention ponds for recreational purposes this winter. The Saskatoon Fire Department regularly tested and monitored the ice thickness at these ponds, posting signage advising of its suitability for use. As the temperature warms, the ice on these ponds has become unsuitable for winter recreational use. Fire crews will be visiting each of these ponds in the coming days to update the posted signage to read “No Skating”.

Additionally, the ice that covered sections of the South Saskatchewan River has also began to melt. The ice that covers this body of water is unpredictable and is therefore never safe for winter recreational use. Community members are asked to maintain a safe distance and never venture out onto the melting ice that covers sections of the South Saskatchewan River.

Community members are reminded to keep a close watch on children and pets when visiting trails, parks, or off-leash areas that may run adjacent to the South Saskatchewan River or a storm water retention pond.

A Fire Investigator has determined the cause of a fire in suite 1502 at 2503 Louise Street to be accidental in nature as a result of soldering from the on-site construction. Damage was minimal and has been estimated at $200.

The Saskatoon Fire Department has now concluded its involvement in this incident.

At approximately 4:02 this afternoon, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a possible structure fire in a multi-unit apartment complex located at 2503 Louise Street. The caller reported ongoing construction in suite 1502 with the concern that a fire may have ignited behind one of the interior walls.

Three Fire Engines, one Heavy Rescue Unit, one Aerial Ladder Truck, one Fire Investigation Unit, and one Battalion Chief were dispatched for response. 

Upon arrival, fire crews entered the suite and observed light smoke; however, no visible flame was present. The utilities to the suite were disconnected to create a safer work environment. Fire crews checked for possible extension of the fire by opening parts of the interior wall, as well as entering and examining adjacent suites; no extension of the fire was found. 

There were no injuries reported as a result of this incident. A Fire Investigator is working to determine a cause and damage estimate.

A Fire Investigator has found that the fire at 131 Primrose Drive was accidental in nature as a result of unattended cooking. Damage to the structure was extensive and has been estimated at $350,000.

The Saskatoon Fire Department has now concluded its involvement in this incident.

At approximately 9:26 this morning, the Saskatoon Fire Department received multiple 911 calls alerting to a possible structure fire in the area of the Lawson Heights Mall. The callers reported observing black smoke in the area, with Fire Dispatchers working to determine the origin of the smoke as coming from 131 Primrose Drive.

Three Fire Engines, one Heavy Rescue Unit, one Aerial Ladder Truck, one Fire Investigation Unit, and one Battalion Chief were dispatched for response.

Upon arrival of the first responding fire crew, it was confirmed that heavy black smoke was exiting the structure and that all occupants had self-evacuated. An immediate attack through a main floor window was initiated to soften the fire, allowing crews to make entry through the back door and transition towards an interior attack. Fire crews shut down the gas line to the house, while utility technicians were requested to disconnect remaining utilities. The fire was quickly brought under control and ventilation was conducted to clear the house of remaining smoke and carbon monoxide. 

One occupant was in need of immediate medical attention as a result of the fire, and was treated and observed by Firefighter Paramedics until transported to hospital with undetermined injuries.

At approximately 2:25 this afternoon, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call alerting to a vehicle vs. house collision at 1318 Junor Avenue.

Two Fire Engines, one Heavy Rescue Unit, and one Battalion Chief were immediately dispatched for response.

Upon arrival, fire crews observed a Dodge Journey that had struck a parked Jeep Grand Cherokee, subsequently colliding into the attached garage of a house. The driver was removed without the use of extrication tools and was transported to hospital with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

One Fire Investigator was later dispatched to the scene to conduct an investigation relating to the structural integrity and security of the damaged house.

The Saskatoon Fire Department has now concluded its involvement in this incident.

At approximately 3:00 this afternoon, water rescue crews conducting sonar scans of the water identified an abnormality below the surface near the Victoria Bridge.

One water rescue diver entered the water at this location. The abnormality was confirmed to be one non-viable patient. A second water rescue diver entered the water to assist with recovery efforts. 

The Saskatoon Fire Department has now concluded its involvement and this incident has been turned over to the Saskatoon Police Service.

At approximately 1:45, the Saskatoon Fire Department was alerted to reports of a person in the water in the area between the Senator Sid Buckwold Bridge and the Victoria Bridge.

Two Water Rescue Units, one Fire Engine, and one Battalion Chief were immediately dispatched for response. 

Water rescue crews with the Saskatoon Fire Department are using sonar technology to identify any abnormalities in the water that should otherwise not be present. Water rescue divers are currently in the water; however, their search has remained inconclusive.

This incident is ongoing and additional information will be released as it becomes known.
