What We Are Asking

The South Saskatchewan River (river) is an important attraction and main focal point of Saskatoon. It is a fundamental part of our story and remains a key destination for those who visit or live in Saskatoon.

From June to August 2024, the City is engaging the community on how you currently access and use the river, as well as how the City can improve river access, use and safety for years to come. Your feedback, along with best practises from other cities and internal considerations, will help in developing a decision-making framework for how the City provides future facilities, amenities and programs related to river access, use and safety.

Why We Are Doing This Work

This study aims to explore river access, use and safety, while also considering the growing demands on the river, the ecological health of the river valley and ensuring its continued enjoyment by all people. The South Saskatchewan River provides valuable recreational opportunities for Saskatoon and area, including:

• Active recreation – both motorized and non-motorized
• Passive recreation/leisure – such as fishing, beach-going, trail use, walking, biking, special events, etc.
• Commercial/industrial uses – such as tour boats, dredging, bridge maintenance and construction
• Regulatory and emergency uses – such as Police, Fire, environmental and water quality analysis, etc.

Each of these uses requires safe, environmentally sound access to the river via appropriate measures and infrastructure. This study seeks to improve the overall experience of accessing the river for all users, while also promoting responsible and safe use by the community.
