Fire crews battle apartment fire
At approximately 2:23 a.m. Sept. 28, 2019 The Saskatoon Fire Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a fire in a apartment on the 500 block of Ave X. S. Three engines, one ladder company, one rescue and one battalion chief were dispatched to the call. On route fire crews were able to see heavy smoke in the area. Once on scene crews found the third and fourth floor balconies fully involved with fire. Crews quickly deployed hand lines and began with a transitional fire attack hitting the fire from the exterior. The initial attack suppressed the fire quickly and allowed fire crews to gain access to the interior of the involved apartment suites to continue suppression efforts and search for any victims. The fire was under control in 1 hour and crews searched the remaining suites and attic areas for fire extension and determined the fire was extinguished.
A Fire investigator was called to the scene and is working to determine a cause of the fire, at this time a damage estimate was not available.
Witnesses on scene stated one male jumped from the third floor balcony of the involved suite before fire crews arrived. He was immediately transported by ambulance with undetermined injuries.
