Water Treatment Plant Perimeter Security
The Saskatoon Water Treatment Plant constructed an enclosure and guardhouse around its facility in order to increase water security for its over 300,000 customers, following recommendations by Public Safety Canada. This project included the permanent closure of the Avenue H and 11th Street intersection, and the installation of full perimeter fencing. The enhanced security does not restrict public access points to the adjacent Meewasin Trail or Victoria Park.
A guardhouse and main entrance gate constructed on 11th Street allows for ease of secure access to the facility for deliveries, staff and contractors. The City engaged residents in neighbouring areas who said they wanted the result to be aesthetically pleasing. Except where necessary, there is minimal concrete block, favouring ornamental metal fencing. Construction of the enclosure and security features was completed in December 2020.
New King George and Holiday Park Traffic Plan
The intersection at Avenue H, Spadina Crescent and 11th Street was permanently closed on March 15, 2019 to improve safety at the Water Treatment Plant. A new traffic plan included the following projects:
- Traffic signal changes at the intersection of 11th Street and Avenue P;
- New signage and traffic calming infrastructure will be added at specific locations in the area to discourage short-cutting on residential streets between Avenue H and 11th Street;
- Re-alignment of Dundonald Avenue and Spadina Crescent for traffic to the SaskPower Queen Elizabeth Power Plant; and
- Turn-arounds will be constructed on Spadina Crescent between 11th Street and Dudley Street, and between the Gordie Howe Bridge and south of Schuyler Street.
Adjustments to the traffic flow in the area may occur in summer 2021, to be aligned with the King George and Holiday Park Neighbourhood Traffic Review.
