Rising to the Challenge

Since 2014, the City has been investing in the Building Better Roads program and water/wastewater upgrades to sustain our city's high quality of life.

Other governments implemented service reductions to address their financial pressures. In 2018, the City of Saskatoon has not adopted this approach. Civic Services Survey results show residents do not want service cuts to balance the budget.

The 2018 Budget rises to the challenge to address declining non-property tax revenues. Over half of the increase is due to Provincial funding impact.

The City’s 2018 Operating Budget proposes an annual expenditure increase 2.72% which is 0.68% below the estimated inflation, growth and service level expenditures. We’ve done this by controlling expenditures and finding efficiencies of $3.11M.

The City of Saskatoon derives its operating revenues from five different sources. Less than half comes from property taxation.
 

The 2018 Business Plan and Budget is investing in our infrastructure to sustain our city’s high quality of life.

The City pays 70% of its capital projects through reserves. Without these funds, the City would need to rely more heavily on debt and property tax payments or reduce the amount of capital work being completed.
