Firefighters’ National Memorial Day
September 9, 2022 - 2:00 pm
As a tribute to the firefighters who risk their lives to keep Canadians safe, the second Sunday in September of each year is formally designated in memory of firefighters who have fallen in the line of duty. This year, Firefighters’ National Memorial Day will take place on Sunday, September 11.
“Firefighters put their lives on the line in service every day,” says Fire Chief Morgan Hackl. “On Firefighters’ National Memorial Day, SFD joins cities and fire departments across the country to honour and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and to commemorate their courage and unwavering dedication to serving our communities.”
The Saskatoon Firefighters Union IAFF 80 will observe Firefighters’ National Memorial Day with a private ceremony on the evening of Sunday, September 11.
The City of Saskatoon’s flags are currently at half-mast in remembrance of the victims of the attacks that occurred at the communities of James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon and also in remembrance of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The flags will remain at half-mast for one additional day in honour of Firefighters’ National Memorial Day.
